In 2015 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission made 94 calls to action in order to redress Canada's legacy of residential schools and to advance the process of reconciliation. One of those actions was to establish a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation "to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process." Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we are reflecting on the horrific past, the systemic discrimination of the present and the work that needs to be done for a more equitable future.
