Journalist for Journalists vigil, Toronto – February 1, 2024
“Journalism is not a crime, but killing journalists is.”
Thank you Lito Howse and Jay Wu for beautifully capturing our vigil for journalists killed in Gaza, Israel and Lebanon last Thursday.
When Pacinthe Mattar, Fatima Syed, Inori Roy and I began planning this event, we had no idea if 15 or 150 people would show up. But we knew even if it was just us four standing in the cold, we had to do something to mark this unprecedented time. We are truth tellers, and when journalists are under attack, so is the truth. It was so encouraging to see nearly 200 journalists join us in affirming our commitment to press freedom.
A huge thank you to our partners who made this event possible: Sonya Fatah and TMU Journalism for facilitating the space; Inspirit Foundation for the grant; Amnesty International Canada, J-Source, and Canadian Press Freedom Project for their vocal support, additional speakers Shireen Salti and Josh Bloch. Rana Hamdy and Nahed Dajjani for ASL support and Zuhoor Designs for the beautiful florals.
