Mortar & Pestle Records is an independent record label focused on releasing hyper-hypnotic dance music and evocative experimental sounds that’ll make you wiggle and bounce. Headquartered north of the 49th parallel, we understand digital music as a global phenomenon and readily work with international artists.

From the apothecaries of old to contemporary culinary artists, cultures around the world have been using mortars and pestles since ancient times. The goals they came with and results they garnered varied drastically, but the concept they applied was consistent: provide a sturdy container to house ingredients, then use your tools to grind them down to their essence, mashing up raw material until you come out with something different. It could be something delicious, or something that helps you heal. It might be something that expands your mind.

We like to think we look at sound the same way Victorian alchemists looked at experimental elixirs while they brewed, the way chefs look at selections of fresh herbs. Our goal is to create that container where raw materials can be combined and processed. Our creative processes favours experimentation over formula, and our obsession with quality demands that we grind every noise down to its essence, just to see what we can make of it.
