Adam Nayman () on CONCRETE VALLEY, "The films of Antoine Bourges are quiet, tender and oblique; they force the audience to lean in. Like their stubborn, fragile characters, they meet us on their own terms. Beginning with its stark, forbidding title, there's nothing easy about Concrete Valley, which probes the physical and sociological topography of Toronto with a mix of melancholy lyricism and ethnographic rigor. In lieu of easy reassurances about the process of assimilation, Bourges offers us a tour through the fissures—an absorbing and unsettling meditation on how it feels to be lost at home."

Jonathan Romney writes on THE MAIDEN for , "Economical, elliptical and altogether haunting...Graham Foy’s low-key drama starts off feeling like a sketchbook piece of fragmented realism, but becomes increasingly dream-like; and soon after it flips halfway to reveal itself as a diptych, we come to realise that it’s a much more ambitious piece than it at first appears." THE MAIDEN continues across Canadian screens this week.
In honour of THE MAIDEN returning to Calgary tonight , we’re shouting out all the local high school students who played a huge part in making the film, both in front of and behind the camera.
Producer Daiva Zalnieriunas and director Graham Foy worked with several high schools in Calgary and Cochrane, AB for years in the process of casting THE MAIDEN, holding auditions and workshops. The result of this intensive process led to not only the incredible young cast, but a work placement program for many students interested in filmmaking.
A big thank to the students, parents and staff of Central Memorial, Bow Valley and Cochrane High Schools for their support to the film! 📚 🎞️
Manhola Dargis of The New York Times calls THE MAIDEN, “A dreamy, gentle story of loss and mourning… a haunting that feels like a generational cri de coeur.”

On April 20, MDFF will be presenting HUMAN FLOWERS OF FLESH, followed by an in-person Q&A with director Helena Wittman (.wittmann).
“Helena Wittmann’s second feature follows Ida (Angeliki Papoulia), a wanderer who lives with a crew of five men on a ship. After hearing stories about the French Foreign Legion during shore leave in Marseille, she becomes fascinated by their male rituals and camaraderie and sets sail on a journey across the Mediterranean to their headquarters in Algeria. Along the way, Ida and her companions dip into the waters, read to each other, and look at postcards, passing the time through the creation of their own rituals that erupt with sensuality. Quiet, elliptical, and mesmerizing, Wittmann depicts the sea as a breathtaking force of nature, a setting in the creation of mythologies, and a site for the unfolding of time and history."
After playing at Locarno and NYFF, this will be the Toronto premiere.
In 2020, we programmed ’s award-winning debut BAIT, but the screening was sadly cancelled due to the pandemic. Ahead of its Canadian release, MDFF is presenting the Toronto premiere of his sophomore feature ENYS MEN on March 30 at 6:30pm.
