"True Survivors” - Premiering on CBC The Nature of Things February 24, 2023
Why are we so fascinated with Survival? The sheer number of hit reality TV shows on the topic reveals the extent of our obsession. Through a journey of scientific and personal discovery, with the pacing and style of an adventure film, Sarika Cullis-Suzuki challenges the modern stereotype of “man against nature” and gets to the root of human survival.
Growing up, Sarika loved to play “Survival” on the beach with her dad, David Suzuki. Playing the same game with her own kids today, one thing is clear: climate change has raised the stakes.
Sarika, a scientist and mother who fears for her children’s future, invites her audience into her lived reality as she embarks on a journey that takes her from the stunning deserts of New Mexico, to the edge of the ice in Canada’s north. She learns from experts in anthropology, paleobotany and restoration ecology about how humans adapted to extreme environmental change in the past. She speaks with Indigenous elders about cultural survival and the strength of shared knowledge. Finally, right at home in her own province, Sarika witnesses a truly incredible case of survival in the face of a human-caused climate disaster.
A survival story that connects generations and passes the torch from one of Canada’s most prominent environmentalists to his daughter, True Survivors explores our shared human resilience. How have humans adapted and survived in the past? And, what will it take to survive what’s next?
