FORT NELSON -- The Patry Creek wildfire has shown increased activity resulting in a 'considerable increase' in smoke along Highway 77, according to the BCWS. Travellers are advised to expect poor visibility and to drive with caution through the area.

The fire remains out of control since its status changed on July 5th, and has grown to over 163,000 hectares since being discovered.

The BC Wildfire Service notes that while the fire’s intensity may fluctuate in the coming days, it is expected to stay within its current boundaries. Although the fire does not pose an immediate threat to Fort Nelson, area restrictions remain in place.

The B.C. Wildfire Service says recent rainfall and cooler temperatures have reduced the wildfire risk in the northwest and Prince George Fire Centres, the latter covering B.C.'s northeast region, including the Peace and Fort Nelson.

A provincewide ban on campfires has been in place since July 12 and remains in place for the southern part of B.C. as hot weather is forecast to return and hundreds of people remain out of their homes.

In the north, only campfires that are smaller than 0.5 metres high and 0.5 metres wide will be allowed. Fireworks, lanterns and burn barrels continue to be banned.

This comes into affect at Noon Aug 1.

Fort Nelson wildfire situation update: 27 July 2024 - IMT to Demobilize.

Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM) has updated residents on the wildfire situation surrounding the area...

The NRRM stated that the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) will be demobilizing its Incident Management Team, stationed in Fort Nelson since late May, on July 27th and 28th.
The local government pointed to the departure of fire crews and resources as a “significant step forward” in wildfire management efforts.

The BCWS says the precipitation and cooler weather have reduced the risk of systemic wildfire activity.
According to the NRRM, personnel will remain on hand to continue “managing and monitoring the situation closely.”

Fort Nelson was evacuated earlier this summer, with an evacuation order being issued by the NRRM on May 10th, lasting for two weeks.

According to the BCWS, there are still 430 wildfires provincially, and about 60 percent of them are out of control.

Note that at some point in time today July 26, we could be off-air 15 to 20 minutes while we power up a new more robust transmitter.

Wildfire Update July 17, 2024 at 11:15 a.m.

British Columbia’s forests are burning up. Year after year, B.C. wildfires of increasing size and intensity displace thousands and reshape the province’s landscapes. Smoky skies have become the summer norm. Fire season is now inescapably part of living here.

Here’s what you need to know about wildfires currently burning in the province and what to do if fire approaches your doorstep.

- As of July 17, there are 157 active wildfires including 16 new starts over the past 24 hours. In the last seven days, 136 fires were successfully extinguished, including more than 30 in the past 24 hours.

- On July 16, Cook’s Ferry Indian Band issued evacuation alerts and orders in response to the Teit Creek and Shetland Creek wildfires. Evacuation alerts and orders remain in place in Wells, near the Cornish Mountain wildfire.

- Fort Nelson First Nation requests community & anyone for that matter, avoid using the backcountry to ensure safety and to avoid potentially interfering with ongoing firefighting operations.

- Due to hot dry conditions, a province-wide campfire ban is in place. Find out more about restrictions and bans in place across the province.

- Temperatures are expected to reach above 30 C in many parts of the province this week, accompanied by thunderstorms in some regions and high winds, which have potential to increase fire activity.

- The northeast continues to suffer from severe drought that took hold in 2022 and holdover fires in the region remain a concern. These conditions can lead to extreme fire behavior and put forests at high risk of new fires, with the potential to spread rapidly.

Definitions:

- Out of control: A wildfire that is continuing to increase in size or anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter or control line. Out of control does not mean the wildfire is dangerous or a threat. It refers to conditions, including weather forecasts and fire behavior, that are expected to keep the fire growing.

- Being held: A wildfire firefighters are able to keep within a pre-determined perimeter and not expected to immediately spread further, based on fuel, weather conditions and available resources.

- Under control: A wildfire suppressed to the point it will not spread beyond the current perimeter.

- Out: A wildfire no longer burning.

- Holdover: A wildfire that continued burning throughout the winter, smoldering underground. While the extent of holdover fires is defined by their last perimeter, how much of the fire is still burning is unknown. When warm, dry conditions occur in spring, a holdover fire can reignite.

- Evacuation alert: A notification a wildfire is burning close to your home or community and you should be ready to leave on short notice.

- Evacuation order: A notification you are at risk and you should leave immediately.

- Fuel: Any organic matter that can ignite and burn, such as leaves, sticks, grass and trees.

- Initial attack: Similar to “first responders”, this refers either to the first firefighting personnel to arrive at a wildfire or the action taken to halt the spread or potential spread of a fire.

- Controlled burns: Prescribed or controlled burns are a tool to mitigate the effects of fire both during wildfire response and before fires start. Reducing the available fuel by safely burning it when conditions allow can protect communities and support wildland firefighters during a response situation. Cultural burning is also a form of controlled burn.

Download the BC Wildfire Service app on Apple or Google Play for information about fires, suppression efforts and evacuation alerts or orders. Make a plan using B.C.’s emergency ready service and prepare a grab-and-go bag. If you see a wildfire, please call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell phone to report.

In B.C., the majority of wildfires each year are caused by lightning, according to the provincial government. Human activities including carelessness, such as flicking a cigarette butt out the car window or not fully putting out a campfire, make up the remainder. However, when BC Wildfire Service notes the cause of a fire is human, this does not necessarily mean a specific person is responsible. Put simply, it applies to any fire not started by lightning. For example, a wildfire lit by a tree falling on a hydro line would be categorized as human-caused, as would a fire started by industrial activity.

Wildfire Restrictions Update:

FORT NELSON -- The threat posed by wildfires near Fort Nelson has led to area restrictions being expanded.

The restrictions were first put in place in May following the Nogah Creek and Parker Lake wildfires.
According to the BC Wildfire Service, the restrictions have been expanded to reflect the current wildfire situation and went into effect at 12:00 p.m. today.

The restrictions now cover further north of Fort Nelson and less of the south end of Highway 77.

Three new fires were also sparked today and are currently burning out of control...
The fires are burning along the Snake River approximately 30 to 50 km's from Fort Nelson, and are all currently measured at less than a hectare in size.

Travel into the restricted zone is prohibited unless travelling to and from a private residence home or for official purposes.

The BC Wildfire Service also allowing access into the restricted zone for the following purposes:

-Using a highway as defined in the Transportation Act;
-Entering the area for an approved purpose of supporting wildfire suppression activities.
-Entering the area for the purposes of carrying out an industrial activity at a regulated oil and gas site.

Failure to comply with the order could lead to a fine of up to $1150.

The restrictions are set to remain in place until October 15th, 2024.

Wildfire update from EOC NRRM & FNFN:

As many of you are aware, there are wildfires active in the surrounding wilderness. While firefighting efforts are underway, we want to stress the importance of prioritizing safety and being prepared. The wildfires remain a significant distance away from the Fort Nelson First Nation (FNFN) IR #2 reserve and the settled area Fort Nelson.

Fort Nelson First Nation and Northern Rockies Regional Municipality are working closely together with BC Wildfire Service and other local partners to ensure clear and timely communication during this situation.

Due to the unpredictable and volatile nature of the fires, we kindly ask all community members to refrain from accessing the backcountry at this time. This precaution is essential to ensure your safety and to avoid any potential interference with ongoing firefighting operations.

We also ask that community members of each respective community please provide their Emergency Operations Center (EOC); either the FNFN's EOC or the NRRM’s EOC with updated locations of your cabins, traplines, or culturally significant areas so that we can ensure this information is passed on to BC Wildfire Services.

Please know that we are closely monitoring the wildfires in the area and will provide further updates as necessary. In the meantime, let us continue to support one another and remain vigilant during this challenging time. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

FORT NELSON, B.C. – The Fort Nelson First Nation in northeast British Columbia has issued a wildfire evacuation order for a remote riverside reserve, telling residents and visitors they must immediately leave by boat.

The First Nation said the order covered the Kahntah Reserve, which is a few kilometers south of an out-of-control fire that was discovered on Monday. The BC Wildfire Service said on its online dashboard that the blaze, measuring five hectares in size, was believed to have been caused by lightning.

The evacuation order comes as the service announces a province-wide campfire ban, with the exception of the Haida Gwaii Forest District, which will take effect on Friday because of the increased risk of wildfire starts.

The Kahntah Reserve is about 116 kilometres southeast of Fort Nelson.
