As a process-oriented project, Scaffold* Journal is curated by both topic and methodology. Each section of the journal centers around a methodology or approach to inquiry.

Our first section, ‘Community Engagement and Participatory Processes,’ investigates the role of bottom-up processes in the design and research project. From urban interventions to national parks, the authors in this section centre the role of the community and impacted groups in their research.

We sat down with co-director and founder of , Miles Gertler, to talk about what design research entails in his interdisciplinary work.

An established designer with a background in architecture, Gertler’s parallel design and visual practices explore ideas from city-building to self-design and the body. In our conversation, Gertler reflects on navigating both worlds—and how his ongoing work around death sheds light on how we live.

If you’ve been in the studios at in the past two years, it’s likely that you’ve encountered parts of trees floating around. That’s all thanks to the work and teaching of Zachary Mollica. Friday brought upon us a truly beautiful evening. We laughed, we cried, we revelled in the company of our peers, and most importantly, we’d like to express our utmost gratitude to everyone who came out to our launch of Scaffold Volume 1.1. We throughly enjoyed meeting/chatting/making merry with you all.

If you weren’t able to attend, fear not! We still have a few zines up for grabs. Swing by the installation to get one for yourself, or get in touch with us if you want us to set one aside for you. Either way, stay tuned for upcoming festivities…if all goes according to plan, they won’t be long off.

Thank you to .ideas for capturing this moment!

Big news for those of you that haven’t left the house since our last launch event in November. WE’RE HAVING A PARTY!

After many correspondences, copy edits, conversations, and caffeinated beverages, we are elated to launch the first edition of our newest publication, Scaffold* Journal. We’ll be hosting a little soirée from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Daniels Student Commons, where you can ponder words from our team members and contributors over complimentary refreshments, parse through our newest risograph zine, and peruse an installation put together by our designers.

Tickets are not required—just show up. And bring a friend or two! We miss your beautiful faces

To our lovely SHIFT* community,

We are so humbled by the outpour of love and support that we have received from you with the launch of SHIFT*11. We hear you want to be a part of our team and join us in our little ordeals, and we would love to have you! With the semester wrapping up and summer on the horizon, we don’t have the capacity to add new members to our team just yet.

We plan on expanding in the late summer and towards the Fall 2023 semester after a few needed preparations have been made and we can ensure we are ready to support our team and our community as best we can. Until then, expect SHIFT*12: Favourite Fixation to be published sometime in May. We‘d love to see you all submit your work so that we can get to know you, what you‘re about, and what you‘d bring to our team. ;)

Take care of yourselves, and don‘t lose too much sleep.

Faithfully,

The SHIFT* Collective Team

Our latest "In Conversation" with Trina Moyan discusses the inspiration behind her latest play—“The Cave that Hummed a Song,” which she both wrote and performed—along with her own experience as an Indigenous woman and practitioner. In her own words, she connects the play’s narrative to sexual desire and greed that speaks to climate change, the MMIWG2S movement, matriarchal knowledge, and the power of collective love and forgiveness, all laced with humour.

Our second “In Conversation” piece with Maria Arusiag Saatgian provides insights about the world of AI, it’s development, and it’s integration in our everyday lives. Facilitated by Creative Director Emma Hwang , this dialogue builds on a question prompted in SHIFT*11: Fantasy Deconstructed—Is AI Capable of Love?

Backyard Trips: Artist Feature #1

Statement from Augustine Whlok, an architecture student at the Daniel’s Faculty:

“My first journey: A meet with fellow enthusiasts, some as amateur photographers, others as bloggers. I climb into the basement of a church whose congregators are long gone, grabbing a window frame for support while avoiding a pipe that threatens to pierce my forehead. The others find it fitting that my first urbex site should be a church. One of them calls it a baptism.”
