Fernwood Publishing Critical books for critical thinkers. Fernwood Publishing and our literary imprint, Roseway, publish critical books that inform, enlighten and challenge.

We are political publishers in that our books acknowledge, confront and contest intersecting forms of oppression and exploitation. We believe that in publishing books that challenge the status quo and imagine new ways forward we participate in the creation of a more socially just world. We are not afraid to take risks in this regard and are proud to publish those individuals or ideas that too ofte

n go unheard. While corporate giants act to silence dissent, we act to give dissent a voice. As an independent Canadian publisher, we also emphasize, though not exclusively, Canadian authors and the Canadian context. The quality of the books we publish and the relationships with our authors demonstrate that every member of our small team is dedicated to the publishing and political goals of social justice.

"Believing that only Western powers are imperialist fits with the outlook that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend,” which appeals to some supporters of Palestine. That outlook leads people to bad places. One such place is refusing solidarity with or even empathy for people who’re oppressed by states whose rulers clash with the United States. Instead, we should side with oppressed people everywhere without politically supporting either Western powers or governments in conflict with them.

Take the case of Ukraine. It’s reasonable to point to the hypocrisy of Western governments that oppose Russia’s war and occupation in Ukraine while backing Israel to the hilt. There’s also nothing wrong with questioning uncritical portrayals of the Ukrainian government, which is neoliberal, pro-NATO, and pro-Israel. Or with opposing how Western governments are using Russia’s war to justify higher military spending. Or with criticizing how the U.S. has used the war to try to weaken Russia.

But none of this should get in the way of taking sides: we should be in unconditional solidarity with Ukrainian resistance to Russian imperialism, as with all resistance to imperialism. As one slogan puts it, “From Ukraine to Palestine, Occupation is a Crime!” In both cases – as in all struggles against injustice – we can be in solidarity with the oppressed without endorsing the political forces that lead them." - David Camfield

With one month until the release of Born Sacred: Poems for Palestine by Smokii Sumac, indigenous artists from across Turtle Island are reading selections from the collection. This poem " #54" is read by Metis poet Christi Belcourt.

Born Sacred is a collection that exists to express solidarity between indigenous people on Turtle Island and Palestinians. Born Sacred is also an archive of grief that reminds us to remember the days of the genocide and how it felt to learn of the horror. Born Sacred is a testment to life beyond genocide, the power of poetry and the a memorial to the martyred poets of Palestine.

Those who stand up for just social and economic causes have long faced repression by the Canadian state. In this moment, the struggle for Palestinian liberation is the most unifying cause for people who want to build a better world. For this reason, it is no surprise that anti-genocide activists lik...
