Monsoon-Music Monsoon-Music is an independent music label that provides a platform for experimental art music engaged in transcultural exploration.

Monsoon-music is a digital home and community space where all artists retain 100% of their album sales. Jonathan Kay, Andrew Kay and Justin Gray have united under Monsoon-Music to cultivate a creative and harmonious consciousness that aspires towards the highest ideals of humanity through their collective expressions of art and music. Since the dawn of humanity it has been known that music is the

universal language that is both transformative and healing. It is through this ancient science that Indian Raga music has evolved and Monsoon-Music is dedicated to sharing this spiritually healthy music with people from all cultures, offering an enriching and elevating experience. Monsoon-Music is culturing a deep understanding of Eastern philosophy and music, and aims to unify the fabrics of both Eastern and Western music and culture in a harmonious and innovative expression. Through their traditional and contemporary music, the trio hopes to leave a lasting impression on the listener, engaging and challenging them towards inner fulfillment.

“Creative Unity” summarizes and focuses our goals as Monsoon-Music. We believe in the purification of all thoughts and actions into a wider and more luminous plane of consciousness where the individual-self merges with the universal-self. The intuitive and creative expression of our intimate relationship with the universal-self is what we aim to express through our art and music. The dissolution of the self into that of a larger, broader collective consciousness aids in the purification of the ego and ultimately elevates the root motive of all action into a higher and wider light. Monsoon-Music is devoted to creatively expressing a unified consciousness that will elevate and enrich all aspects of our lives. Inspired by their time living in India, the trio aim to infuse their music with the sacred and vibrations first revealed to the ancient mystical yogis. This musical consciousness, passed onto us by our Guru, Shantanu Bhattacharyya, is a powerful instrument of spiritual elevation. By dedication and sincere devotion to these ancient teachings and music practices, Monsoon-Music aspires to create music that elevates the listener into higher and wider planes of being. Monsoon-Music is excited to share their vision of this consciousness by building a community of aspiring and like-minded individuals, and organizing events and concerts that will unify and strengthen our connection with each other and the Cosmos. Since it’s creation, Monsoon-Music has organized a multitude of meaningful and successful events, including 4 wonderful years of The Toronto Indo-Jazz Festival, and The Monsoon-Music Scholarship was created to raise money for under-privileged music students in rural India, and Monsoon-Music has successfully donated thousands of dollars to make a lasting difference in these children’s lives.

Toronto Indo-Jazz Festival 2025: Bridging India and Canada Through Music
October 24 – November 14, 2025 | Toronto, Canada

The Toronto Indo-Jazz Festival (TIJF) returns for its 7th edition with an inspiring series of performances that bring together Indian classical and jazz traditions through a lens of collaboration, innovation, and cultural dialogue. Curated by Andrew and Jonathan Kay (Monsoon-Music), the 2025 festival unfolds across Toronto’s leading cultural venues — the Aga Khan Museum and Small World Centre — in partnership with ISHQ Festival, Raag-Mala Toronto, Small World Music, and the Aga Khan Museum.
From the ancient Guru-Shishya Parampara to boundary-pushing Indo-Jazz, the festival explores how music transcends borders, generations, and genres.

🎶 October 24 – In Conversation with Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya
ISHQ Festival @ Small World Music Centre | 8 PM
An intimate evening of conversation moderated by Andrew Kay with Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya, one of India’s leading vocalists, joined by Jonathan Kay, his long-time student and collaborator, and Mitra Bhattacharyya, a rising vocalist and scholar. Together, they will share insights into the Guru-Shishya Parampara — the traditional Indian teacher-disciple relationship — and perform select works that illuminate the living transmission of this art form.

🌱 November 2 – New Horizons

Rooted in North Indian classical music and modal jazz, their sound blends intricate rhythms, thematic melodies, and spontaneous improvisation. Amrita’s music is shaped by a shared love of odd time signatures, expressive tone, and the interplay of texture and emotion.
Gandhaar Amin (bansuri, electronics) and Dhaivat Jani (tabla, electronics), this electrifying duo merges traditional Indian instruments with contemporary sound design, weaving grooves, melodies, and textures that embody the evolving landscape of global fusion music.

Our Story

We live in a time of rich cultural dialogue and global interconnection which has in turn inspired unprecedented diversity and creativity in the arts. Monsoon-music is an online home which supports cross-cultural exploration and experimentation.

Monsoon-music was founded in 2006 by Jonathan and Andrew Kay and Justin Gray. Since then Monsoon-music has earned a reputation for supporting cross-cultural dialogue and art. Based on Toronto, Canada, Monsoon-music is engaged in bringing artists together from all cultural heritages, encouraging the confluence of traditional music with contemporary forms of expression.

With digital recording technology more accessible then ever, online musical content creation has exploded, and the advent of global internet accessibility has enabled independent artists unmediated accessibility to specialized audiences. On one side of the coin, the digital age has created a new paradigm for the independent artist, with unlimited possibilities in the digital interconnected world. Free from the artistic limitations of profit oriented music labels, online interconnectivity makes it more possible then ever for artists to explore musical creation on their own terms.

On the other side of the coin, online music streaming sites have lead to unprecedented accessibility of music, which have drastically reshaped of the mode of music consumption in the digital age. This has it’s benefits, but has also instigated irreversible damage to the music industry leading towards the ultimate devaluation of music. It is undeniable that globalized techno-capitalism is reshaping subjectivity through modes of digital consumption and the music industry has become a game of designing momentary viral trends, in which algorithms (based on unethically mined data) predict and manipulate the next virtual sensation.
