Say, hello to Rachel.
Rachel acknowledges that she lives and works on Chief Drygeese Territory, the Traditional Lands of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, the North Slave MĂ©tis, and the many other Nations that have travelled here for millennia.

She is originally from St. Catharines, Ontario, and is a grandchild of Dutch settlers. She moved to the NWT in 2007 to volunteer at Deh Gáh School in Fort Providence. Rachel hold a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and earned her teaching degree in 2010. Since then, she has spent many years advocating the benefits and joys of reading and storytelling through her work there, then later with the NWT Literacy Council, the Yellowknife Playschool Association and, most recently, Bushkids.

As she taught in Fort Providence, Rachel noticed a gap in the resources available to educators. The students often did not see themselves reflected in the material they were reading and, in addition, they were not reading that material in their traditional language. She took a step to change this when she wrote "A Journey Down River." It won the SSDEC story writing contest, which allowed for it to be published in four languages. The book won the Northwords’ Youth Book Award in 2018 and, that year, was translated into a fifth language, Dene Zhatie, the local language of Fort Providence.

While raising two beautiful children, Rachel has continued her learning journey, becoming a Forest and Nature Practitioner. This inspired the recently released, "The Land Outside My Window", which is illustrated by the very talented artist, Elaine Landry.

Then Judith called! New friends, new opportunities, new vision!

Northern Quill Publishing is an exciting new venture of which Rachel feels privileged to be a part. Her hope is to help create content that all children of the North can connect with and be inspired by.

Myranda Bolstad holds a B.A. in English from the Augustana University College (now Faculty of Augustana, University of Alberta) and an MSc in Creative Writing from the University in Edinburgh in Scotland. While her day job is as a communications professional, she’s also continued to pursue her love of literature through participating in the NorthWords Writers Festival and taking on freelance editing opportunities (not to mention a fixture at the local Indie bookstore as part-time staffer and long-time customer). She primarly enjoys working on fiction, particularly fantasy and romance, but her experience also includes children’s picture book editing, including Jessie Wilson’s “Gabby the Magic Poodle”, Amber Henry’s “Northern Princess”, and Rachel VanderVeen’s “The Land Outside My Window”… as well as writing one herself! With Sarah Kalnay-Watson, she published “If the Northern Lights Could Speak” in June 2023.

Myranda resides in Yellowknife, part of the traditional lands of the Yellowknives Dene First Nations from time immemorial and then the homeland of the North Slave Métis, and which are within the Mǫwhì Gogha Dè Nı̨ı̨tłèè lands of the Tłı̨chǫ. She invites people belonging to marginalized groups to know you are welcome and safe with her; she is happy to work with anyone regardless of age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, disability, and ethnicity.

(She also doesn’t love photos of herself and debated submitting one of an owl instead, but better sense prevailed.)

Say Hello to Amber

I came to the NWT in 2008 believing that Yellowknife would provide opportunities that would challenge and inspire… I have been fortunate in having those expectations met!

I published my first book, “A Ptarmigan in a Birch Tree’ in 2016 and fell in love with the process of mixing my words, with local art and meeting new people along the way. In 2019, I wrote a novella, under the pen name, Lilith Thorn, called “The Becoming.” And in 2021, my most recent children’s book was released with a story walk around Niven Lake trail, where “Northern Princess” takes place.

In addition to writing and producing my work, I spend time with new authors and guide them through the process, sharing resources and lessons I’ve gathered along the way. I hold space at William Mac, giving time for their grade 6, 7 and 8’s to write and publish a year end anthology for their school library, as well as the Yellowknife Public Library. I also sit on the NorthWords NWT board to help plan events focused on supporting local authors, including their spring literary festival.

My time with Northern Quill Publishing will be spent admiring the talent pool we have here in the NWT. Finding projects that I’m passionate about and feel embraces the Northern story and then sharing them as far and wide as I can!

My favourite books include: (the short list)
Children’s Books: Miss Rumphius, by Barbara Cooney. Lady Bug Girl, by David Soman. Stella Queen of the Sky, by Marie-Louise Gay.
Graphic Novel: The Sculpture, by Scott McCloud. Locke and Key, by Joe Hill.
Novel: The Probability of Everything, by Sarah Everett. The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. Where the Forest Meets the Stars, by Glendy Vendereh
Poetry: by Tennille K. Campbell. Phantompains, by Therese Estacion.

Say Hello to Judith!
I came to Canada as an immigrant to teach. Before moving north, I taught in Montreal and from there to Fort Simpson.
An opportunity presented itself to start a bookstore (not a life ambition but a place I had always felt at home from an early age). So, for 40 plus years I have worked in the book world.
About 20 years ago with a group of likeminded writers, readers, and other book fanatics we proposed a “Northern Writers Festival”. To our amazement and joy the idea clicked and it continues successfully today, showcasing, inspiring and supporting our writers.
In my years with books, I have had the chance to work with schools, libraries, non-profits, community governments and large corporations, on projects large and small. It is a privilege that I have so many friends and contacts here in the Territories and across Canada, connected by books!
For me it would round out my working life publishing northern stories at home.

Say Hello to Lana!

Lana de Bastiani is a passionate advocate for children's literature and northern Canadian storytelling. With a Master's degree in Education, Lana has dedicated her career to developing relatable and engaging literature for children, particularly in the unique context of Canada's Northwest Territories. Lana was born and raised in Yellowknife, NWT and grew up reading Robert Munch, Jan Brett, and Michael Kusugak which fueled her inspiration to produce literature about the north.

In 2018, Lana self-published her first children's book, "The Fox and My Boot," which was followed by "Nick the Northern Special" in 2022. These works were born out of Lana's deep commitment to creating narratives that reflect the experiences and landscapes of northern Canada, fostering a sense of place and belonging in young readers.

In 2022, Lana founded Northern Special Books, recognizing the need for a dedicated platform to showcase children's literature from the North. Now, as part of Northern Quill Publishing, Northern Special Books continues to thrive as the children's book branch, maintaining Lana's vision of providing diverse and authentic stories for young readers.

Lana brings a wealth of experience in children's literature development, self-publishing processes, project management, educational materials, and funding applications to her role at Northern Quill Publishing. With her expertise and passion, Lana is committed to amplifying northern voices and celebrating the rich literary heritage of Canada's northern regions.
