The odds are pretty good** that you're not doing this one incredible thing that could change your marketing. Forever.

Phew, now that the clickbait opening is done with, I can assure you that you can start doing this one thing and, in fact, already have everything you need to do it.

That thing is customer research. Like, actual conversations with the customers who buy your product or service AND love it.

According to Forget The Funnel, marketers who conduct audience research are 466% more successful than those who don't.

How is that for mind-blowing?!

Why though? Well, because if you really understand your customer, really know their motivations not just for using your product but switching to it in the first place, you have a giant leg up in creating marketing & sales processes that really, truly serve them.

What's my problem?

Hey, I'm not just an entrepreneur, a marketer, a consultant. I'm also a customer. Of many companies. (Just like you.)

As a customer, I like when the company I'm buying from gets to know me. Understands why I buy what I buy. What my problems are. What I'm trying to solve.

Remarkably few do this! And that's why I keep talking and talking about customer research. Meeting your actual, real customer. Asking her directly about all sorts of things. Not a persona, not an assumption—a real customer.

It's scary to think about research, I get it. But I also have found multiple ways for my clients and friends to get started without having to spend an enormous amount of money or, especially, TIME!

"Results" is a funny word.

For every client I work with, I get results. But before you think I'm patting myself on the back, I want to clarify that these results aren't always what I (or the client) was looking for.

Not to overgeneralize, but most people I get on sales calls want new business, new customers, new sales. Totally understandable. But a lot of the time, all it takes is to start digging to find out that new customers aren't usually the problem. Nor even the best, or easiest, result one can get.

Moving away from the acquisition as the only measure of success or the only thing that matters may have unintended positive consequences. Better yet, make them intentional. Let's figure out the results you are looking for and the results you need.
