‘Jazz is not something that can be defined through blunt instruments. It is much more poetic than that”. Pat Metheny.

What can I say about Pat Metheny that hasn’t been said before?

It was the summer of 1987 & a very good friend of mine (the late) Steve Evans a fabulous Jazz Pianist from Torquay South Devon gave me a copy of ‘Still Life (Talking) by The Pat Metheny Group on vinyl. From the first moment I put it on my turntable, I was blown away, to say this album changed my life is an understatement. I have seen Pat Metheny in concert in Rome Italy, Tokyo Japan, Florida USA & in the UK several times. At the bottom of this page you will see a manuscript of ‘Last Train Home’ from ‘Still Life (Talking)’. It was sent to me by Pat’s management team in Boston with Pat’s signature on it. It is like all my Birthdays have come at once. OMG!

So it was very appropriate that I opened up ‘Jazz Moods’ on The Voice Radio North Devon last night show. As promised here is a list of other fabulous Jazz Artist also featured on the show: The wonderful Quiana Lynell, the splendid Peter White, the impressive Althea Rene, the striking David Blamires, the astounding Bob Curnow & The SWR Big Band, the breathtaking Arturo Sandoval & The WDR Big Band, the superb Chris Tedesco, Hiroshima.since1982, the magical Wolfgang Haffner with Ulf Wakenius & Sebastian Studnitzky, the beautiful Abbey Lincoln, the fantastic Brendan Rothwell, the incredible Cynthia Thijs-Coenraad, the great Michael Lemmo, the superb Drew Davidsen, the marvellous Ann Hampton Callaway, the excellent Ive Mendes, the extraordinary George Benson with Earl Klugh & a track from ‘Collaboration’, the wonderful Gabriela Anders, the scintillating Lisa Addeo, the fabulous Dee Dee Bridgewater, the sublime Scott Wilkie, the most amazing & beautiful cover of a Sting classic song ‘Fragile’ by the Cuban Band The Rhythms del mundo, the delectable Dianne Reeves & the governor Mr Bob James.

We also played tracks by the brilliant Tim Bowman & Patrick Bradley who have had Birthdays this week. Many Happy returns of the day gentlemen.

A lot of the brilliant Jazz artist mentioned above have appeared on an interview show called’Jazz Across The Pond’ - Jazz Interviews Re-Imagined with Mr G (Kevin Bennett Goolsby) & myself The Jazz Cat. You can find these shows on YouTube. We hope you enjoy.

Until next Wednesday night from 8-10pm 🇬🇧 Stay safe & look after yourself. Me, I got to decide where I’m going to hang my most treasured possession!

Burt Bacharach 1928-2023. RIP.

On February 8th the world woke up to the very sad news that one of the greatest composers, songwriter, pianist & record producer had passed away.

His music was the soundtrack to my childhood with his music filling the house with his classic hits. On this weeks ‘Jazz Moods’ on The Voice Radio north Devon, I dedicated the whole show to his memory with some of the greatest Jazz artist covering his many great songs.

Born Burt Freeman Bacharach on May 12th 1928 he was widely regarded as one of the most important & influential figures of the 20th-century. He composed hundreds of pop songs, many in collaboration with lyricist Hall David. Burt’s music is characterised by unusual chord progressions, influenced by his background in Jazz harmony.

We played the following brilliant Jazz artist on the show: McCoy Tyner Trio with Symphony (from the album The Music of Burt Bacharach) Al Jarreau with a track from the soundtrack ‘Night Shift’ a song written by Burt, David Foster & Jay Graydon, Isaac Hayes, Quincy Jones & his Orchestra, Liane Carroll from the album ‘Son of Dolly Bird’, Roland Kirk, Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66, Johnny Hartman from the album ‘Raindrops keep falling on my head’, Sarah Vaughan, Ron Isley from the album ‘Isley meets Bacharach - Here I Am’, Dave Koz from the album ‘Hello Tomorrow’ with Herb Albert, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall from the album ‘The Look of Love’, Chihiro Yamanaka, Pat Metheny with ‘Alfie’ from his album ‘What’s it all About’, Rumer with her album ‘This Girl’s in Love’ a Bacharach & David Songbook, Oscar Peterson & we also played a track from the brilliant album ‘Woman’ with The Houston Symphony, plus a couple of tracks from Burt’s brilliant 2005 solo album ‘At This Time’. We couldn’t not play the instrumental version of his Oscar winning song from the film with the same name ‘Arthur’ staring the late Dudley Moore. We finished the show with the wonderful ‘That’s what friends are for’ with Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Stevie Wonder & Gladys Knigh.

Why Jazz? Well In Burt’s early days he used to visit many nightclubs where he got to listen to such musicians as Dizzy Gillespie & Count Basie whose style influenced his songwriting. Also he studied music (Bachelor of Music 1948) in New York & California. During this period he studied a wide range of music, including JAZZ harmony, which became an important influence in his songs.

We may have lost him, however his music will live on forever.

Until next Wednesday night, stay safe.

Coming up next week, we have got Canadian Big Band Singer Mr Matt Forbes in the hot seat for another informative and entertaining interview which will be available to watch soon. We know you liked the teaser track we played last night.

Talking of Canadian singers, I treated you to a little ‘Sand in my Shoes’ from the mesmerising album ‘Alone Together’ by Carol Welsman. If you missed her interview with us, here it is again.

Until next Wednesday night stay safe
