Using stories has always been integral to our approach to avalanche education at the UAC. Since our inaugural avalanche education video, “Winning the Avalanche Game,” back in 1996, we’ve recognized the power of storytelling to convey important lessons. When we set out to create a new version of the Know Before You Go program, we knew we needed compelling narratives to drive home the dangers of avalanches and the long-lasting impact of our decisions in mountain terrain.
Collaborating with Sherpas Cinema proved to be instrumental. Their expertise in finding powerful stories enabled us to uncover three deeply moving narratives that perfectly illustrate our message. We’re immensely grateful to Adam, Katie, Brad, and Ginny for sharing their stories with us, and we hope that everyone who watches this film is as profoundly affected by their narratives as we were. Our ultimate goal is for viewers to take away a lifelong lesson about mountain safety and the consequences of our decision - Chad Brackelsberg Executive Director of the Utah Avalanche Center

KARMA TSERING SHERPA //

Our dear wise friend has moved along the great cycle of life, and into his next existence. His kind and gentle presence left an indelible impression on us and many others.
Creating this sequence for “Into The Mind” with Karma and Renan Ozturk was one of the most mythic experiences of my life. No words can describe. He prayed for many hours as he did everyday, appearing to transcend this reality and move through others, seemingly oblivious to our presence. In between sessions he’d serve us delicious tea and crack jokes, chuckling infectiously. But at one point he said in Nepalese: “good and bad, what you desire to have is in your own hand. If you serve someone well, in return you will get well serve.”
Perhaps now more than ever, Karma’s words are important. Put goodness into the world and treat your neighbours with respect, and the great cycle will bring that same goodness back to you.
From his grandson Pemba Sharwa on Saturday:
“Yesterday was a significant day for myself, my family, friends & families all over as the spirit of my grandfather Karma Tshering Sherpa finally got free completing the 49th day seeking a new rebirth, a journey afterlife into a new existence.
We had ceremony of prayers, offerings and chanting for his soul all these past seven weeks to help & ease his transition into his next existence and to encourage positive karma for his future. As per the our Buddhist rituals and Lamas, Karma’s soul will reborn as a human life in a new foreign land.”

For @ginnardwhite, coming from a long lineage of backcountry users has shaped her life to this point. Through these generational experiences, she speaks to the importance of education and mentorship, stating the more you know, the more you realize there’s always more learning to do. Refresher courses, more time in the snow and smart terrain choice are going to facilitate the best outcome for anyone moving through the mountains.

Our new project opens Canada Day at Canada Place! 🇨🇦🏔
#Windborne is a giant-screen immersive 5D experience about the beauty of the Canadian Rockies and the people who call them home. It will screen 7 days a week in Vancouver at FlyOver Canada through summer and fall.
Sherpas director @davemossop acted as Creative Director of the talented crew that brought to life both the pre-show and the soaring five-dimensional flight experience. Wonderful relationships with Indigenous knowledge keepers and stewards of the Rockies allowed us to channel storytelling from ancient ancestors and combine their incredible wisdom with the remote wonders of the Canadian Rockies. The result is a sky-scraping and soulful journey that can only be experienced.
