Pika: The Rock Rabbit - by Dr. Wayne Lynch

Every autumn, if I want to brighten my day, I drive to the mountains west of my home in Calgary to watch American pikas prepare for winter, and this year was no exception.

Everyone who sees a pika (pronounced PIKE-ah or PEEK-ah) for the first time invariably exclaims, “Aww, it’s so cute.” The diminutive pika is a cuddly furball about the size of a baked potato.

The pika is a habitat specialist that lives almost exclusively in barren rockslides and talus slopes. From across this ravine, I could hear the pika’s telltale whistle coming from the distant talus slope. As I hiked closer, it continued to call. The pika whistles to advertise its ownership of a territory, signal its dominance when chasing an intruder, or sound an alarm when it spots a predator.

Toronto Through My Lens: A Photographer’s Journey - by Peter Dulis

Toronto is a world-class city, and I’ve been fortunate to live here for most of my life. While its iconic landmarks draw the spotlight, the city’s true spirit often reveals itself in subtler ways—in the quiet corners where locals gather, in the daily rhythms that give each neighborhood its own heartbeat, and in the hidden gems that most visitors, and even many residents, pass by without notice. These layers of experiences are what make Toronto more than just a destination - they make it a place you can fall in love with over and over again. This month, I’m excited to share a few of my favorite photo moments with you - scenes that remind me why I love capturing life in Toronto.

Why I Switched to the Tether Tools AeroTrac Workstation - by Will Prentice

For years, my Tether Tools TetherTable was my go-to setup. It was solid, dependable and it just worked. I honestly didn’t think I needed anything different—until I got my hands on the new AeroTrac Workstation system. Now, after using it for the last week, I can say it’s not just a replacement for the TetherTable—it’s an upgrade I didn’t know I was missing.

Fun with Wide Angle Lenses - by Tony Beck

Creative artists have something in common. They view the world with a unique perspective. Photographers easily alter their perspective by simply changing lenses. Although most of my work involves telephoto lenses, I frequently enjoy playing with super wide angles. Regardless of subject, wide-angle lenses tend to stretch visual information, subsequently distorting any subject closest to the photographer. The exaggerated view can include much detail while providing clear, candid, or comical effects.

I sometimes need a break from shooting with telephotos. Wide angles provide a refreshing diversion. They force me to explore my surroundings with a different mindset. The results frequently satisfy my creative endeavours...

Intern Insights: A Two-Part Series with NCAA Photos - by Tyler McFarland

Making More with Less - Over the last five months as a photography intern with NCAA Photos, I’ve learned the value of subtraction. Clearing distractions, packing light, and creating space to focus have become essential to how I work. When I graduated in May 2024, I chased “more,” believing it would make me a more valuable employee. Every pitch, putt, and jump had a place in the story, and I was determined to be there, camera in hand, for all of it. At the time, I believed packed schedules led to stronger galleries and satisfied clients. While I’m still eager to grow, I leave my internship at NCAA Photos with a clearer understanding of how less can create more: more space, more clarity, more time, and greater impact.

Stay Dry, Stay Hidden: Think Tank Photo Rain Covers are Now Available in Realtree® APX Camo

Wildlife photographers have long faced two constant challenges: unpredictable weather and the need to stay invisible in the field. Think Tank Photo has just made both a little easier with the release of their legendary Hydrophobia® Rain Covers and Emergency Rain Covers in Realtree® APX Camouflage.

This new camo finish was inspired directly by requests from photographers who wanted serious weather protection without standing out in the wild. Whether you’re waiting quietly for a rare bird or capturing the drama of wildlife in action, this pattern blends seamlessly with natural environments – bark, moss and foliage – so you can focus on your subject, not your silhouette.

Italy isn’t just a place—it’s a living gallery, a dance of light and shadow, texture and colour, where every turn offers a new composition waiting to be captured. We’ve been there a number of times and never get tired of it from north to south. My favorite Italian destinations aren’t just beautiful—they’re photogenic in ways that stir the creative soul. So here are some of my favorite places to visit in Italy.

Nunavut Loon Quest #2 - by Dr. Wayne Lynch

Again, this month I want to share with you some of my favourite photos from the four weeks I spent in July 2022 on Victoria Island in the Canadian Arctic. The main focus of the trip was to pursue the three arctic-nesting loon species: red-throated loon, yellow-billed loon, and Pacific loon. In my post last month, I featured the red-throat loon and yellow-billed loon. This month, the Pacific loon is the star. As I mentioned previously, many other avian species besides loons captured my attention on the trip, and they are featured as well. In the last few days of my trip, the high temperatures on Victoria Island were 5°C and 6°C (41- 43°F). The wind was gusting to 60 kph (36 mph), which made the wind chill equivalent to -2°C (28°F). Such is July in the Arctic.
