Back in September 1999, I joined CJSW radio as a volunteer and co-host of Megawatt Mayhem, the finest Metal radio program in the land. Now, as I enter my 15th year as a programmer I have been offered a wonderful chance to host my own prog
ram called Attention Surplus Overdrive. I will stay on as co-host of Megawatt Mayhem, one of the world’s longest running Metal shows (10:00pm to Midnight) and then I will take over the airwaves for the next three hours. HISTORY
Regular listeners may know that for at least 10 years Rich Z. was the host of a fine program called Attention Surplus Disorder heard in the same time-slot on Saturday night/Sunday morning right after Megawatt Mayhem. Richard is now retiring from the radio game and he and the station saw it to allow me to assume that time-slot with my very own show. FORMAT
It was agreed that this new show would stay in line with the stations Saturday night format of heavy music with the seven-hour triple threat of Nocturntable/Megawatt/Attention Surplus Overdrive. The name was chosen in consultation with Richard as a tip of the hat for his decade of programming and as an evolution of his vision and show. What does this mean? Attention Surplus disorder will bridge the gap between Richard’s Progressive Rock show and the Metal insanity of Megawatt Mayhem. My show will feature the more melodic side of Metal, the mellower stuff if you will. As you may know Metal is divided into roughly a dozen key genres from light to heavy, from commercial to extreme. Stating it in the simplest terms, A*O will feature the melodic genres namely everything with ‘clean’ vocals. Progressive Metal, Melodic Metal, Guitar heroes, instrumental songs, symphonic Metal, gothic Metal, Folk/Pagan Metal, and even ballads will be featured on my new show. A*O will be more of a music-based program (unlike Megawatt’s magazine/talk/interview format) and feature the best of the progressive/melodic/symphonic side of Metal from across the ages. Oddly enough many people have a perception of me as just a ‘Power Metal’ guy, (which I do love!) but I have far broader tastes in music and this new show will give me a chance to explore both the lighter and heavier sides of my musical programming tastes. The end result for Megawatt Mayhem for my selections means that I will get to feature a far heavier range of music. I actually have a massive personal collection of Thrash, Death Metal and Black Metal that I will be integrating into Megawatt Mayhem, meaning that it will become a bit of a ‘heavier’, more extreme show by default. My new show, Attention Surplus Overdrive will be lighter (but heavier than Attention Surplus Disorder) and Megawatt will be heavier and I sincerely hope all Metal fans will find something to enjoy on Saturday night. The final exciting part is that CJSW will be podcasting shows in the near future. If you can’t stay up late to listen live (who wants to stay up until 3:00am anymore?) you will be able to listen to all programs including Attention Surplus Overdrive at your convenience. THANKS
