Red Rising is an unfiltered space for Indigenous peoples to tell their stories about what is happening right now, and what is about to happen next, in their lives and communities. nd all proceeds go towards printing and distribution to the community. You can get a copy of Red Rising Magazine on our website at redrising.ca, at McNally Robinson, or from a collective member. Suggested donation is $10, and we also provide 500+ free community copies each printing. There is a lot of momentum happening in our community right now, and we feel like it's a good idea to capture the energy of Indigenous peoples rising up. We assert ourselves as leaders and work hard for respect. We feel like there has never been a better time to be Indigenous, and that if we work together, we can begin to take on more leadership roles in this country. Welcome to Red Rising. The time for our stories to be told is now.

Our thoughts are with the family of Roger Roulette, who was a contributor to our Language issue. We've lost many Elders and Knowledge Holders recently, which has tremendous ripples. Their lives continue on through our daily work.

This year has been difficult for all of us survivors of the genocidal Canadian residential school systems here at the Sunshine House. During the papal visit to Canada, we shared food and feelings with each other. We witnessed the wide range of emotions as those of us impacted come to terms with what was said, what was omitted and what transpired.
The legacies of the schools is a regular topic of conversation at Sunshine House as many of us are doing our own healing in our own ways. We are very grateful for the generosity and love of those who come to our space and share their stories. Many of us are still young, still learning, and have been disconnected from our cultural practices. Those who guide us – including George, Kelly, Gayle, Winnie, Ricky, Kirby, Fabian and Merle – contribute so much to all of our recovery and we are eternally grateful for them.
Throughout the year, the entire Sunshine House community has held space with one another and we will continue to do so during the emotional waves that come before and after September 30. Today and this week we truly hope that everyone that has been directly impacted can find some comfort as they navigate the emotional waves. If you are not one of those directly impacted, please take the opportunity to support those who have in whatever ways you can. It is really important to not ask for their labour today. There is a lot of information available to you — you can start with the entities linked below.
Much love to all of our relations.

“The 19-year-old model is a warrior for her culture and the land her people have inhabited for thousands of years” 🤩
Nineteen-year-old model Quannah Chasinghorse made history when she became the first Indigenous woman to walk for Chanel this past fashion month, in addition to walking the runways of Chloé, Savage x Fenty, Gabriela Hearst, and Prabal Gurung. But bringing visibility to the Native American community in the fashion community is just one part of her mission. She’s determined to amplify their stories. “There are always Indigenous people showing up, doing the work, and I don’t think we get enough recognition,” she says. “Our voices are constantly being pushed away because people don’t take us seriously. We’ve always been a stereotype, a mascot. We’ve always been not seen as real humans. Being a part of that change and encouraging other Indigenous youth to step up and use our voices, but also to be proud of who we are, is what motivates me. It keeps me wanting to keep doing what I’m doing.” Read her full ELLE January 2022 digital cover interview here: http://ellemag.co/NJ8AzdK

Auntie power makes the world go around. 💜✨
“Aunties Love” this piece depicts the strong role aunties have in their niece/nephew (traditional way their daughter/sons lives). They are there to teach our babies the importance of life and life lessons. Love, grief, acceptance, problem solving, strength, values...The list could go on forever. If you’re an auntie, recognize your strength and love. ❤️ if you are blessed to have an auntie or if your child has an auntie - let them know they are loved and valued as second moms. ❤️ These practices need to continue for the future of our indigenous children.
