Here’s to the unsung heroes of video production. Today, we honor The Scratch Track Reader. You will never hear their voice on the final product, but their influence is audible. The scratch track reader voices the entire script for the editor, so that the editor can cut the video, add pacing and create a nearly perfect end product, because spending money on the actual announcer before the video is finalized would be foolhardy, especially when changes are not just possible, but probable. Here at Five Foot Five, a wardrobe closet provides just the right acoustics.

In case you’re wondering, the scratch track duties are usually given to the editor or the producer… anyone who can read. Now you know!

Light is the material that we paint with. On a recent trip to New York, two photos taken moments apart. One, sultry and grey. The other, fiery and sharp. Each creates its own mood. When we shoot, we look at how the light helps shape the message. Yes, even in corporate videos.

In New York visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We fixated on the Mexican print gallery and this caught my eye. The simplicity of the design and graphic layout of the poster, and the even simpler color scheme made this poster stand out. Now if we can get the Adobe plugin ;)

The week is done and we at Five Foot Five Video & Creative like to bid the week a fond farewell with a pint of beer from a local establishment. Today, it’s Cold Garden, which tells you we worked in Inglewood. Cheers!

Corporate video is our lifeblood. It’s the best education money can’t buy. We can think of few careers where you are willingly, if not eagerly, invited into the workings of a corporation. And here we are.

When we heard that director Danny Boyle shot his new zombie flick, 28 Years Later, on an iPhone 15, we weren’t surprised. Phone camera quality is impressive, with logarithmic color. We regularly work cell phone footage into our projects. It’s efficient and cost-conscious.

We just completed our first Business Builder video for Begonia Bakehouse. The Business Builder is a simple, short video where you, the business owner, tell your story. It certainly doesn't hurt when your story includes tasty offerings! What's your business story?

We love doing interviews. It’s not just sitting down and asking a bunch of questions. It’s a craft. It’s listening for the nuggets and then shaping some of the answers so that they work in the video.

There’s also the whole not getting personally involved thing. We’ve asked some tough questions and being empathetic without being emotional is key.

Savvy marketers and business owners have prevailed in the art of the videography with smart phones. But, sometimes, you need a little more muscle. Meet the Sony FX6, the Rocky Balboa of production cameras. If you have a job where you need to punch above your weight class, give us a call. Yo, Adrian!

A few years ago, we created a high-end video for a person selling an estate near Red Deer. Like most real estate videos, ours did the usual walk-through, highlighting vaulted ceilings, exquisite stone-work and panoramic views. It was everything you’d expect in a sales video. But, we went a step further. We edited the video to an emotional, symphonic music track and augmented the video with natural sounds – birds, water and wind. The video worked so well that the family decided to keep the house, having fallen in love with it all over again. Sigh.

Real estate videos are nothing new. They showcase a property, letting the potential buyer feel like they already live there. And when married to the right music, they can go the distance, turning feelings into emotions.

It’s interesting to us that we rarely see this strategy applied to a person selling a business. To date, we can’t think of a single video intended solely to showcase a business for sale. We’ve certainly never been asked.

And so we want to plant seeds in the minds of those in the process of selling a business. Why not have a video showcasing your company? The video strategy comes from the same place as a video designed to sell an estate – you want people to imagine themselves in that space. You want them to see all the features that work – the layout, the facilities, the equipment, the people. You also want to show them the potential. They want to see where they can take your business to the next level. That’s difficult to demonstrate on a piece of paper.

Successful businesses are sold through a natural life cycle. We choose to move on. We get old. At some point, it’s time to sell. Having a sales video that showcases the blood, sweat and tears you’ve put into your business and how immensely proud you are of what you’ve accomplished is a powerful tool when it comes time to sell, and we can put it together for you.

Give us a call. We like coffee. That’s all it will cost to chat. And if, by chance, we work together and you love your video so much that it rekindles your passion for your company, sorry/not sorry.

I was going through some drives and came across this gem from a long time ago. The challenge we had was to teach healthcare workers about privacy. We had to be fun. We had to demonstrate the processes. And we couldn't shoot in a hospital. So, I came up with the idea of the AHS Players. We shot on a stage with lots of props. It was a long (but fun) day. The video was so successful, AHS licensed it to other health regions (I presume they made their money back). Hats off to Gordon Rix, Jacey Ma, Rae Ferrer and Michael McAdam, (who you might recognize as the funny WestJet flight attendant doing the safety briefing in the viral video).

Good luck getting something like this done today in Alberta.
