[...] Magalie was happy to answer, explaining how the play was inspired by her own life.

“I had tumultuous romantic experiences in my 20s and this show is a reflection of how I dealt with it at the time (poorly) and how I healed. "Homecumming" explores themes of self-love, relationships and it is a very s*x positive show that explores taboo subjects in a touching, fun and relatable way.”

Considering the subject matter, it's no surprise that the process has been one of personal growth from the start, but the lessons went farther too.

“Since the story is inspired from my life, this project has terrified me from the get go, but I needed to get my story out. I needed to do it for my broken past self, whom I know exists and lives in a lot of people. It was very healing. I also realized I've come a long way since I left this past version of myself (portrayed in the play). Moreover, I learned a lot about theatre, acting, and performing from my director Marie Queenan. She really helped shape the show and guided me through the very emotional task that is to reveal yourself truthfully in a very vulnerable manner to a live audience. I definitely grew as an actor and gained confidence. Also, Festival St-Ambroise Fringe de Montréal artists, volunteers and employees are super supportive and loving. Couldn't have been picked by a better Fringe to do my show premiere.”

As for what she hopes audiences take away from her show, the message is an important one:

“I hope it raises awareness about self love. Making mistakes and hurting people in the past doesn't make us bad people. Failures and challenges are part of life. It shapes us as humans. I hope people learn to be kinder to themselves and realize we all deserve love and happiness. Change and healing are hard, but necessary for growth and love.”

I trust my gut - Dead Boy Detective’s Lead Actor Jayden Revri

“That’s kind of how I’ve always approached any role or audition. I trust my gut, believe I understand how these characters work, and try to bring a bit of myself into every role that I do,” he responds. “I was fortunate that Steve [Yockey], our showrunner, allowed me to bring a lot of myself into Charles. There have been so many renditions of the Dead Boy Detectives, and I wanted to keep Charles true to his core, but Steve encouraged me to bring some of my own charisma and personality to the role. I’ve trusted my instincts throughout the process, and he seems to be happy with the result. I just hope everyone else is as happy with it as I am.”

Having now worked on both sides of the audition table, the writer-producer-star of “Inside Amy Schumer” knows how actors can make a solid impression. She told Backstage that when casting her show, she looks for performers who commit truthfully to their delivery, a philosophy she has incorporated into her own approach. “The way I audition now, I just treat it like a rehearsal,” she explained. “I treat it like I already have the role and I’m just going to rehearsal.”

What McDormand needed to develop was a technique that would allow her to authentically experience the emotions and psychology of her character while maintaining control over the results. “There’s a really deep well of experience and emotional facility,” McDormand explained, “but it has to have a really tight lid. You have to be able to get the lid off when you need it and dip down into the well, but you can’t keep it open all the time or you won’t survive . . . the trauma of bringing it back.”

In 1933 Meisner became disenchanted with pure “method” acting. He wrote “actors are not guinea pigs to be manipulated, dissected, let alone in a purely negative way. Our approach was not organic, that is to say, not healthy.” Meisner has ongoing discussion about technique with Adler, who worked with Stanislavsky in Paris and Clurman, who took deep interest in the American character. Eventually Meisner realized that if American actors were ever going to achieve the goal of “living truthfully under imaginary circumstances,” an American approach was needed.
