Team Canada Wheelchair Basketball team makes the medal round semi finals Durham’s Ontario Tech University grad “Nik Goncin was clutch!” with 16 points

Canada secured a huge 79-67 victory over Netherlands to advance into the men’s wheelchair basketball semifinals. The difference was a monster 26-10 second quarter for the Canadians. Patrick Anderson had a double-double with 20 points and 20 rebounds with Nik Goncin adding 16 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds.

“Everything went right today,” said Anderson. “It started in the first half with guys stepping into open spaces and hitting jumpers like Tyler [Miller], Vincent Dallaire and Chad Jassman. Then we just kind of kept our foot on the gas and when things got tight down the stretch, Nik [Goncin] was clutch. I was spinning my wheels a little bit and watching the clock and Nik closed for us in a special way.”
Canada, eighth at Tokyo 2020 three years ago, will now get the opportunity to play for a medal. The semifinals, versus United States, will take place Thursday Sep 5th. Watch live on the FREE CBC Gem app (or replay it) or on CBC television!

Like its twin, the Paralympic Cauldron in Paris 2024 will shine without fuel. A meticulous combination of a cloud of mist and beams of light, the Paralympic Flame flickers with electricity as its sole source of energy. French designer Mathieu Lehanneur came up with a new-generation hot-air balloon that carries a ring of fire with it.

Visible and warm, this Flame is also a technical feat. The ring of fire, almost 7 metres in diameter, incorporates 40 LED spotlights to illuminate the cloud created by 200 high-pressure misting nozzles. Above all, EDF is providing a continuous flow of electricity and water 60 metres above the ground, when the Cauldron is in flight (sunset to 2am).

The 2024 Paris Paralympics have begun! Good luck to the 125 athletes representing Canada. Two of these amazing athletes have connections to Durham.

Follow the Paralympics on CBC television or the CBC Gem app.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will unfold over twelve days of relentless competition and vibrant camaraderie, from August 28 to September 8, 2024. It will bring together over 4,400 of the globe’s most incredible Paralympic athletes.

With each passing edition, the Paralympic Games have grown not just in size but in the hearts of people worldwide, becoming a cornerstone event that captures the imagination of millions. These Games transcend the boundaries of sport, offering a powerful platform to highlight the intersection of athleticism and disability, ignite societal progress, and champion the cause of inclusivity on and off the field of play.

The Region of Durham and area municipalities are once again coming together this National Hunger Action Month to help raise awareness, food donations, and funds to fight hunger in the community.

Hunger is an important issue that affects individuals, seniors, and families throughout the Region. As Durham Region continues to rapidly grow and food prices increase, more people are experiencing homelessness and/or using food banks and related services than ever before. The Region and area municipalities are taking action to address this need in the community.

From September 5 to 27, there will be more drop-off locations than ever located throughout Durham, making it even easier for residents, businesses and community groups to donate non-perishable food items. Visit your local municipality online to find a drop-off location near you:

The City of Pickering buzzed with excitement and community spirit as DIVYA (Durham Intercultural Volunteer Youth Association) and ICCAD (Indo Canadian Association of Durham) hosted a vibrant Indian Independence Day celebration on August 18th. The event truly came to life with a spectacular display of talent from across all age groups. From adorable performances by little kids to impressive acts by seniors, around 89 Durham participants brought their energy and creativity to the stage.

Adding to the festive atmosphere was a lively marketplace featuring local vendors, each adding their own special touch to the celebration. The event was also greatly supported by generous local sponsors.

One of the day’s standout moments was the flag hoisting ceremony, gracefully conducted by Whitby MPP Lorne Coe and the City of Pickering Deputy Mayor Maurice Brenner, which brought a sense of patriotic pride to the occasion.

The flawless ex*****on of the event was a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the Divya Durham Volunteers. Their careful planning and enthusiastic management ensured that the celebration went off without a hitch, making it a day to remember for everyone in the Pickering & Durham community.
