Now that I have completed my two semi autobiographical books, I can relax and go back to translating. I am just finishing up helping with formatting for Byron Jacob’s Dragon Body, Tiger Spirit: A Translation and Explanation of the Classic Texts of Xingyi Quan (available soon).
So - I am looking for a good book on Chuojiao. I prefer drawings, as when books have photos they are usually not clear enough to scan, and it is impossible to get the original files from the authors. I have watched a lot of Chuojiao at our practices in Beijing, and it is definitely a style that merits a book in English. If you post a suggested title, author, and date, I can find it and check it out.

The E- Reader edition is indeed available. It is not up in the bigger shops like Amazon and Barnes&Noble quite yet, but you can get it from Lulu.

This is the Ereader Edition of Shadowboxing in Shanghai. (There was an accidental access to an early proof in 2022. This is the final published edition.)

A few photos that didn't make it into the book, to give you a taste of it. On the frame of a Chen Taijiquan routine, the book has memories of the 1980s and 1990s in Shanghai, concepts about training, a bit about the history of Shanghai, and anything else that popped into my head during the twelve years it took to write. People who are not even interested in Taijiquan may well enjoy it.

The soft cover book (350 pages, US$32.22), Ereader edition (US$15.50), and PDF Edition (224 pages, US$12.10) are set up and ready to buy from Lulu. The soft cover book will gradually show up in global distributors as it goes through the system.
The hard cover book will be ready soon, I just wanted to get the final proof of the soft cover before paying for a hard cover proof. It will be US$53, it is not the super special paper and printing process that I did for Beijing Bittersweet.
If you go to Lulu by midnight Feb 24, the code BOOKIT15 will give you 15% off the price of the soft cover book.

Done soon, very soon. Absolutely last proof going in this week. Shadowboxing in Shanghai should be available by the end of the month.

13/01/2023

I just noticed that I have accidentally gotten an early proof of the E-reader edition of Shadowboxing in Shanghai up and selling on global marketplaces such as Amazon. Do not buy it! I have it set to private at my printers, so thought that it was not for sale yet. The book will be ready very soon, please wait. I will post here and on my website when it is complete. If you have bought the E-reader book, please email or message me, and we can figure out a way to refund you.

23/12/2022

I have become obsessed with maps of Shanghai , so Shadowboxing in Shanghai is slightly delayed. I will finish for the new year, I promise.

I have just found out that Scribe has most of my E-books available online for free. I have filed for copyright infringement, and would like to remind everyone that since covid travel restriction struck (2020), I have no teaching income. I have been working full-time on writing and translating, and that is my income. You can get the books for free (hopefully not for much longer) but is it fair? The reader editions are really not very expensive at all. Master Di Guoyong also gets royalties from his books that I translated. Just saying.

Plum Publications: "We at Plum freely admit that we are big fans of Andrea Falk, in her roles as martial artist, writer and translator. It is this last role that we celebrate today.
When we started Plum, almost 30 years ago, there were so many important texts available in Chinese that we never thought we would see in English and, of course, there still are (many of which we represent). But Falk, and a scattered few, are slowly chipping away at the canon, and this new book is a great example of her work.
Thanks to her translation, Zhang Wenguang’s book on Chaquan, and his smaller text on Tan Tui Kick Drills, (published as one volume) are now available, in English, on Plum. As is typical of Andrea’s work, it is not just a xeroxed copy, but contains additional notes, prefaces, discussions, and a glossary. The format, in English, is accompanied by both pinyin and Chinese character names for each move.
We are just so pleased that the literary martial library continues to grow with quality books like this one.”

I've been working on a side project, a simple translation, as a break from writing, and it should be completed fairly soon. It is a book on Chaquan, one of my favourite styles, by Zhang Wenguang, one of my favourite martial artists. It is old school, from the 1980s, with those cool 80s drawings. The upside of not travelling at all – high productivity.

I am getting a lot of work done on books, so look forward to Shadowboxing in Shanghai sooner than planned.

It is done! Beijing Bittersweet is now available directly at Lulu, althouth I can't seem to get the link to work. You can go to my website www.thewushucentre.ca and click through from there. It will take a while for it to show up in the big booksale websites like Amazon. (to tell the truth, I get more of the money when you get it through my site, directly from Lulu)
It looks pretty good, and was quite the covid project!

I have finally published Beijing Bittersweet in the E-reader edition and PDF edition.
The soft cover book is still having problems with photo quality of the printing, but that is no reason for the people who like the digital editions to keep waiting.

A personal history of living and training at the Beijing Physical Culture Institute during the 1980s, some historical background of Beijing and of wushu during that time, and memories of the people learning and teaching at the Institute then.

Starting to sound like the boy who cried wolf, but the final proof o f Beijing Bittersweet just went in to the printers. The last one had an issue with photo quality, and now it should be good to go. Still looking at March publication, but end of March.

Beijing Bittersweet is getting closer and closer to completion. It will be out early in 2022. I have just sent it off to some friends for holiday reading.

This is a big stretch for Facebook, but I have done endless online searches with no success. I am in the process of getting permission for quotes that I want in Beijing Bittersweet. There is one I cannot find a contact for. Any ideas for Leslie Frewin Publishers, London. Authors Tung Chi-ping, or Humphrey Evans. ?

I am at the point of asking permission for a few quotes for Beijing Bittersweet. That means that I am in my, not final proof, perhaps not pre-final proof, but am starting to think I might be publishing by the end of the year. I've never had to get permissions before, and I don't know how long it takes or how complicated (or expensive?) it is.

Sorry, I have not been able to sort out the sales buttons. So,
step 1: got to lulu.com
step 2: search Andrea Falk
step 3: scroll through about forty books, pdfs, and e-reader editions (the 'refine your search' doesn't work)
step 4: click on the ones you want

I have completed my covid project of putting all my books to hard cover editions. The last to be approved are A Shadow on Fallen Blossoms, which is a revised edition and should have absolutley no mistakes anywhere, thanks to the covid project of Jill Heath. And Di Guoyong on Xingyiquan, a massive, 720 page 7x10 inch book that looks really good on the shelf. It is slightly revised from the 2020 set editions, just fiddling with minor Word program oddnesses that had crept in that I noticed.
I have made a complete sh*te of putting up the shopping buttons at www.thewushucentre.ca, but if you click them you at least get to Lulu.com, and from there you can search my name.

22/01/2021

I just spent quite a bit of time fixing the non-working buy buttons at www.thewushucentre.ca. Thanks to people who reported they weren't working. While I was at it, I did them all, so they would be the same. At the moment, it appears that I have completely messed up the whole thing, and none of them are working. In the good news, it looks like I have fixed the links to the Plum Publications pages that have my books.
I can't go figure it out now, because it is time to exercise.

20/12/2020

PS, Di Guoyong on Xingyiquan, volume three is on special at $20 Canadian. I have some left. The new volume three will not have the partner form Anshenpao – so if you have the original volumes one and two, best to get the old original volume three and get the Anshenpao. I mean, doing Xingyi without doing Anshenpao is just sad.

My book project for the year has been writing an autobiographical book about living at the Beijing Physical Culture Institute in the 1980s, writing a book about living in Shanghai and the Chen Yenxi Taijiquan I learned there.
And completely revamping the Di Guoyong On Xingyiquan series. The main thing for you to know now is - if you have volume one of the Di Guoyong series, you are probably best to get volume two and three now. I have moved things around, so the books are more the same size. If you have an old volume one and get a new volume two, you will not have the twelve animals. If you have none, wait until the new set comes out.

23/10/2020

I am not coming out even with the Di Guoyong on Xingyiquan 3 book set. There are more volume 3 than the others. I have put them on special sale at the website. www.thewushucentre.ca

To do my bit to help out during self-isolation – reading and training to keep healthy and sane – I've put all of the tgl books PDF files on sale at 20% off. These are the books that are downloaded directly from Lulu, and should be the orange buttons on my website. No mailing, no waiting, no special reader needed. The old price is on the website, but if you click the button you will get the 20% off.
This includes: Falk's dictionary, A Shadow on Fallen Blossoms, Di Guoyong on Xingyiquan 3 volumes, Jiang Rongqiao's Chinese-English edition, Li Tianji's Skill of Xingyiquan, Yan Dehua's bagua applications, the video companions of Di Guoyong, Liu Jingru, and Luo Jinhua, and the coaching wushu manuals.

I think I have finally sorted out the problem with the hard cover dictionary's cover. This has taken hours, and a lot of patience from various people at the help desk. Another proof to get, and hopefully this time I will be able to ship them out to those who pre-purchased, and put them up on sale at the website.

The deluxe edition of the dictionaries have arrived at the 'group shipping' addresses across Canada, so contact the person in charge if you have pre-ordered a copy from me during the summer. The compact will ship soon. The hard cover will be a bit later.
For those wondering if you should get one, they have traditional and simplified characters, and you can look up using either, with a pinyin index, a radical order index, and a stroke count index.
This is not a 'one word translation' type dictionary, but an 'explain what the word or phrase means' type. There is a fair bit of cross referencing as well. If I had had one when I was starting out it would have saved me getting a whole row of dictionaries, which, though they look good on a shelf, aren't that much use in the martial arts.

The dictionary is now online and for sale. Soft cover editions and the PDF edition. I am having problems setting up the cover for the hard cover edition. To everyone who bought the book during my last trip, they will be on their way soon. For the others who have been patiently waiting for publication, go to the website and get buying! www.thewushucentre.ca

11/07/2019

Once again, I said, 'it is done'. Then realized it wasn't. Another two weeks, max, and the dictionary will certainly be done. I was pretending the indices didn't need page numbers. And they do, really.

13/06/2019

At the risk of sounding like the boy who cried wolf, the final copy of the dictionary has gone in to the printer. There will be a hard cover, a deluxe soft cover (thick pages, big characters), a compact soft cover (thinner pages, smaller characters, smaller profile), and a PDF. Soon. Very soon.

06/06/2019

The second edition of Di Guoyong's volume 2, Form and Theory, is now done. It contains the Zashichui routine. Master Di was quite disappointed that I hadn't found the space to put it in before. I put the font down to point 10 to make the book a bit thinner, so I could add the routine. Volume 2 is now the same font size as volumes 1 and 3 (which had gone through reprinting and gotten smaller fonts already). It is perfectly readable, no need for bigger. Hopefully I have everything set up properly at the site www.thewushucentre.ca

27/05/2019

The new Jiang Rongqiao Chinese-English books arrived today. So the post office can find me. I have no idea why the proofs for the dictionary have not yet arrived.
