Donald Sutherland wants you to write him a postcard

Our History | Notre histoire

Broadcast media have changed the lives of Canadians, citizens of one of the largest and most diverse countries on earth. The broadcasting revolution began in 1922, when Canada’s first private commercial radio stations took to the air. It continued with the advent of television, the web and now digital.

But broadcasting has always been a precarious business in Canada. The challenges are daunting: a vast territory, a scattered population, far-flung communities and being located next door to the one of the world’s largest content producers – the United States.

In 1927, 76% of the Canadian population listened to the national radio network. From 1928 onward, there were concerns about the future of our broadcasting system, as more and more Canadian listeners tuned into American radio shows!

These concerns led to the creation of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (CRBC) in 1932. The CRBC would later be replaced by a Crown corporation – Canada’s national public broadcaster – on November 2, 1936. For more than 80 years, CBC/Radio-Canada has played a central role in the Canadian broadcasting system.
