The Canadian Caver Magazine The face of Canada's underworld for more than 55 years. Hard copy magazine. Subscriptions are available in 2 - issue increments via our website.

The Canadian Caver is a hard copy magazine which has been published for more than 50 years. It is a decidedly non-profit enterprise, produced on an approximate semi-annual basis, for and by Canadian cavers. We provide accounts of caving expeditions, publish surveys of cave systems in Canada and elsewhere and a wide variety of other cave-related articles which we hope are of interest to cavers. We're all volunteers, and are usually looking for assistants and volunteer editors across the country.

Issue #94 of Canadian Caver is now in the editing stage and should be in the mail in March. It's a full 48-page issue, with a nice mix of articles about domestic caving vs. participation by Canadians in various expeditions abroad, including Mexico, Greece and Patagonia. And unlike just about everything else these days, our $10 per-issue price has not changed for many years!

If your subscription has lapsed or you don't have one, now is an ideal time to get on the books for the upcoming mail-out. (To check on your subscription status you can send an email to [email protected]. To subscribe see http://www.cancaver.ca/pubs2/cc/ccsubscr.htm)

We’re always looking for articles and volunteer editors, and of course the core of the matter is that folks need to keep adding to their caving adventures!

Issue #93 of Canadian Caver is in the editing stage and should be in the mail in November. It's been a while since #92 but this is another very meaty issue – see contents below.

As a reminder, we’re always looking for articles and volunteer editors; without those two contributions, this venerable 54-year old publication cannot continue to exist!

Maybe you missed these new items in the cave survey section of the cancaver web pages? The the first is a great set of scale-sketching instructions by Dan Green, including files to create your own sketching protractor. The second is a small collection of links to cave survey software. It's away! Watch your mailbox for an incoming issue of The Canadian Caver - first from the All Calgary Team.

11/10/2016

The first issue from "Team Calgary" is soon to be printed and mailed. The mailing address and production shifted from Vancouver earlier this year and hopefully The Canadian Caver will flourish there as it did on the "wet coast" for nearly 20 years. Here's a page with a teaser showing the content of the coming issue:

29/03/2016

It's been a long time coming, but we have a collection of all issues from the very first in 1969 to the last of 2015 on a single disc. These were scanned from sometimes tatty originals for the older issues and include the print PDFs for the more recent issues. A pretty nice reference source for folks interested in cave exploration history in Canada (and sometimes elsewhere, like Mexico). This is a fund-raiser which will, with luck, swell the coffers to keep the publication perking along to the next long while. For more details, check out the "sales page":

Those who pay attention to these things may notice that it's been a while since the last issue of The Canadian Caver. Without relating the boring events leading to the delay, I though we'd mention that CC number 81 is poised for the printers. Lots of great stuff, including a chronicle of exploration of caves on Huckleberry Ridge on Vancouver Island (with some sweet surveys), caving in China, recent activities in Manitoba, and a new pit in Ontario - not usually known for it's vertical caving. Some great stuff relating to "SpeleoCanada" - a possible cross-country organization for cavers and cave-related issues. No shortage of other treats for keen cavers.

The long-awaited Canadian Caver #80 (woo hoo!) is very nearly done and should (fingers crossed) be mailed in the next few weeks. The usual gripping tales of underground adventure and science by we Canucks. Subscribers should wait patiently by their mailbox for a very good read.

The next editor is Nate Bock from Alberta, and he'll be on the hunt for good stories and photos...email him at [email protected]

Having a good underground summer? Please keep in mind that we're always on the hunt for tales of Canadian caving, whether within the borders, beyond the borders involving a Canadian or two or some combination. Contact [email protected] for info.

With the rising costs of printing and mailing - mailing especially - it's perhaps time to look seriously at digital production. There would remain costs that would have to be covered by a modest subscription fee, perhaps in the model of the BCRA CREG Journal.

If there were any tech-savvy folks interested in helping/leading with this move, please do get in touch - [email protected]

Happy 2014 to all.

While Chris Lloyd finishes the current issue, it would be nice to line up an editor for the next issue - due out about May 2014. Give it some thought and feel free to get in touch at [email protected]

It's a very satisfying project to complete an issue or two.

03/11/2013

This past summer and fall was full of great caving adventures. Here's hoping that gripping accounts will be part of an upcoming issue of the Canadian Caver. If you have something that could be of interest, send a note to the current editor Chris Lloyd at [email protected]
