At Antioch College in the mid 90s, two courses taught by the fabulous Marianne Whelchel shaped my fascination with feminist literature—specifically the “haunted house.” Not the kind I’d seen in Sco…

We're experiencing some technical difficulties, but we're hoping to get it cleared up. For now, our episode on Helen Marshall's THE MIGRATION has been lost to the void. You can start on our September book THE WINTER PEOPLE by Jennifer McMahon

📚👏🏿In store at A Different Booklist + more copies on the way. Congrats to Oyinkan Braithwaite, whose debut novel, MY SISTER, THE SERIAL KILLER, has been longlisted for the The Booker Prizes 2019! Judges claim book is “as skilful, sharp and engaging a debut as any first novelist can produce" and the prose is “as pointed as a lethal weapon."

Art critic Moira Macdonald (for The Seattle Times) writes: " 'My Sister, the Serial Killer' was a big hit upon its publication in 2018; it was named to a number of best-books-of-the-year lists and was a finalist for the prestigious Women’s Prize for Fiction. Though she’s part of a strong recent line of Nigerian-born women authors — among them Ayebami Adebayo ('Stay With Me'), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ('Half of a Yellow Sun,' 'Americanah'), Helen Oyeyemi ('Boy, Snow, Bird,' 'Gingerbread'), and Chinelo Okparanta ('Under the Udala Trees') — Braithwaite’s voice is unique; I’ve never read anything quite like 'My Sister, the Serial Killer', and I can’t wait to read more from this author."

Things that should be read in the night

Gather round and listen as we three discuss books that strike fear into the heart--or at least try to. We’re searching high and low for female-authored, Canadian works that should be or are labelled as horror. Will we succeed? Join our circle and find out!
