✨📺 Thursday night, I went to the opening of the Vector Festival in Toronto! 📺✨

The showcases digital games and creative media practices. This year’s festival, curated by the talented , is themed “too fragile to hold.”

🗓️ Vector Festival 2024: too fragile to hold
📅 July 11 – 21, 2024

The festival explores the connected experiences of migrating species, weather changes, geopolitical tensions, and data processing. It shows how everything is linked and dependent on each other as we deal with global issues and inequalities. I found the exhibition quite optimistic, perhaps even utopian.

I was particularly captivated by video artwork, “Plane of Incidence,” a brand new piece from 2024. videos were mesmerizing and eye-catching. I also discovered two new artists: , a Jordanian-Palestinian artist, and .web from Quebec.

I wanted to go to a AR tour today but it’s raining a lot in Toronto ☔️ hopefully it will clear up. They have a lot of events featuring new media artworks, don’t miss out the Festival and lmk if you went to one of the events in the comments ☺️ This summer is so busy in Toronto!

I had a fantastic time at last week 🪄

VRTO is an annual conference in Toronto that focuses on media, arts and entertainment in the VR and AR industry. They showcase the latest trends and research in mixed media and this year was no exception.

A highlight for me was to learn more about the various labs and research centres in Toronto: the at , the at . As I’m focusing more on AR with this year, their projects with augmented reality were truly inspiring and fascinating.

Another exciting discovery was , an AR headset that elevates gaming and augmented reality to new heights. I bought one and I can’t wait to test it out at home!

The schedule was packed and I met many talented entrepreneurs and academics. I’m eager to explore more about Toronto’s vibrant MX scene.

Did you go to VRTo this year? What did you like or dislike about it? 🎙️

C’est demain! 📆 it’s tomorrow!

My passion for VR and its intégration into art galleries has been a central theme in my career. Today, I’m more than happy to reconnect with a dear friend and former classmate from our Art History undergrad days in Quebec City, Marie-Soleil Guérin (), who’s now the artistic co-director of Centre Materia ✨

Recently, I’ve shifted my focus towards the francophone community in Toronto. Collaborating with the Université de l'Ontario français and Le Labo Arts Médiatiques has allowed me to explore innovative ways to share how to integrate technology in art

After a transformative six months off following the birth of my little one, I’ve stepped back into the professional world!

In September 2023, I was grateful to join as an associate teacher. Teaching digital practices in French while living in Ontario is a delight for my brain. 🧠 I’m thrilled to work in a francophone environment.

Teaching has opened up new avenues for me. I love the workshops I’ve been preparing, especially those focused on AR and VR. On a personal note, I’ve taken on the mission to make people with glasses more confident wearing VR, as I strive for inclusivity 🤓

I’m leveraging my expertise to impart knowledge on the metaverse, VR, and virtual exhibitions. For instance, I’ll be giving a workshop with to help artists craft their own VR experiences in the metaverse. I also plan to give a talk about the potential of teaching within virtual worlds by the end of November.

Exciting ventures await, like my ongoing trip to LA for a metaverse conference. Life’s a balancing act, and I’m here for every thrilling second of it! 🏃🏻‍♀️💨

Thursday I was at for their new exhibit Piña, Why is the Sky Blue?

On of the work presented was a VR experience made by Simon Speiser () where viewers can wander between 360° videos, rotating 3D models and photogrammetry. It tells the story of Piña, a young Filipino shaman who’s questioning his reality and the potential of mixed realities with magic and rituals.

Obsessed with data, the main character made me think of many people I know who are haunted with their personal data. I think we all care about preservation, and sorting solutions to keep our digital files as long as we can in our lives. But can we? All our hardwares and materials will degrade over time. So what’s the solution to keep our memories intact? 😢

You should go check in out!
📍, until Nov5 2022

I experienced Alienarium5 in VR at Serpentine Galleries and I didn’t like it…

Are you a science fiction fan? Want to meet aliens 👽? Me too! I was excited to go see French experimental artist Dominique Gonzalez Forester's exhibition at Serpentine Galleries, London, and especially to try out the VR experience.

Alienarium5 promises to take you on a journey to the alien world. Unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. Below is my review:
- The VR experience took me nowhere. I was floating in the dark and was surrounded by a cloud of blue dots for a good 10 minutes. Nothing happened;
- The experience was not multi-user. I'm pretty sure I wasn't connected with the other users in the room;
- I had an expensive $3,000 HTC Vive headset to run a 3DOF experience that could run on an Oculus Go;
- I didn't have controllers and the interactivity was limited to my field of vision;
- After waiting for 10 minutes surrounded by blue dots, I finally come across a boring luminescent abstract shape. And that's all.

This experience was virtual reality at its worst. I felt bored, useless and alone 😔 The artist was definitely unaware of the potential of technology, and had no idea what VR can do.

The artwork was produced by HTCViveArts and developed by Lucid Realities - It was terrible, I don't recommend it. I can’t believe the work was sponsored by so many companies and funds, three advisors and a circle of 7 art galleries and art professionals. I'll give it a 1/10 for excitement effort.

I am in Croatia this week & went to ↓

In Split, you can visit the Diocletian’s Palace, which is part of the historic core of the town. The palace was listed in 1979 by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

In the VR experience made by , you get to see Diocletian’s palace the way it used to be in 305 AD, in all its glory. During 15 mins, Séverin (Diocletian’s slave) takes you on a narrative tour through some of the most important parts of the palace but also through the daily life of the habitants.

Here is my review:
+ The experience takes you back in time and let you see the palace as it was 1700 years ago
+ With the help of art historians, the VR movie shows excellent details, patterns, textures & attention to small details
+ It’s educational and a great opportunity to discover the palace with a new perspective and learn about Diocletian’s life
+ The movie was available in 5 different languages
- The camera (first person) was all over the place (forwards, backwards, sometimes you fly, sometimes you are tall, sometimes you are short) and makes you go through objects (which - as you know - is always disturbing)
- It was a VR 360 experience, with no interaction or freedom of movement
- The experience presents you with many facts about the emperor’s life and reign, but it felt a bit random, not organized

7.5/10 for this experience. I loved learning about the Palace and Diocletian. I was truly amazed by the level of details of the architecture. Every tiles on the ground, every mosaic was different. Unfortunately, the narrative felt a bit disorganized with unnecessary details. I wish I could get closer to the textures, because they did an amazing jobs to reconstitute the palace with highly detailed CGI 🤌

☁️ Free your inner world with .global ☁️

This morning I kicked off my day with a VR tour of Galleries and Exhibitions worlds available in STYLY! I was very happy to see .tttt and there!

STYLY (.global) is a Japanese VR creative platform for unique experiences created by artists all over the world.

Artists can create worlds using building tools (Unity, Unreel) and import them in STYLY. Launched in 2017, the application became a great platform for VR art content.

Here is my review:
- a lot of ≠ art content and styles
- the option to create social rooms/ environments;
- you can import any 3D assets and sounds you want;
- it’s free and highly accessible. (WebVR + accessible from any VR headsets;
- download it on Steam or AppLab);
- there is a VR Edit mode included;
- Very few worlds have interactive features;
- Teleportation tool was buggy on Oculus Quest 2;
- Worlds with rotative objects were too heavy and unstable.

Overall it seems to be an application with high quality worlds, very accessible and focused on creative content. It was heavy to load on my VR headset and the worlds are unstable, but the art content is so good that I thought it was worth sharing my experience here! And I took really cool shots 📸

Have you tried STYLY before? If yes, what did you do? Share your experience in the comments ☺️

Jakob Kudsk Steensen is a Danish digital artist based in NYC. He develops immersive installations, which combine virtual reality with video, performance art and documentary filming. Jakob is trained in fine arts, and he uses game engines to develop his work. This allows him to bring a fresh perspective to the virtual reality industry of today.
I experienced the work of Jakob Kudsk Steensen for the first time in July 2017 with Tree, a critically acclaimed virtual reality experience that transforms you into a majestic rainforest tree. The work was exhibited at the third instalment of the Sensory Stories immersive exhibition, curated by
in Montreal, Canada.
I’ve seen Aquaphobia in VR – in 2018, when the work was available on App. Unfortunately, the app showed only a videoclip showing the environment of a 3D room-scale experience. I could not move around as I wish and explore the landscape, which I think was the purpose of the experience. If you have the opportunity to see Steensen’s work completely and in good quality, it is probably one of the more interesting works produced by Acute Art – too bad the video does not even work in the app ~
I wish I could see more work from this artist ☹ I am dreaming into a VR library where I can consult the VR artwork, I want ( ✊)
