This is simulating a tropical thunderstorm in a jungle rainforest ecosystem. This rainforest ecosystem contains a young carpet python hunting for prey.
I use The Bio DudeIn my Crested gecko enclosure, I use @The Bio Dude’s Leaf Litter and Terra Fauna Substrate to replicate the forest floor and humid climate on the Isle of Pines.
Replicating elements of nature within a captivity setting (i.e., “naturalistic keeping”) is fundamental for your reptile to achieve a higher state of well-being. The goal of naturalistic keeping is to promote “species-specific behavior.” If your animal is not displaying wild-type behaviors, your setup lacks necessary environmental enrichment which can lead to stress.
Ideally, you have created an environment that promotes animal activity that correlates with healthy species-specific behavior (digging, climbing, basking, swimming, etc.). Healthy activity will replace any abnormal behavior/unhealthy activity such as pacing, aggression, absolute sedentarism, nose rubbing, etc., which may occur in captivity. Your animal will exhibit activity and movement patterns, whether the activity patterns are healthy and positive is totally dependent on how the reptile’s enclosure is set up.
In this case, I am specifically looking to replicate elements of the natural climate of the coastal forest on the Isle of Pines, one of New Caledonia's small islands, and the native range of wild crested geckos. Humidity and moisture levels play a major role in this habitat. However, replicating high humidity and moisture levels can be dangerous as it tends to also be prime growing conditions for bacteria and can lead to stagnant air.
High humidity and moisture must also be paired with high ventilation and a properly functioning substrate. @The Bio Dude’s Terrra Fauna substrate is specifically designed for biomes that can get warm but have humidity spikes throughout the day. It retains moisture but also drains efficiently.
