Language Lesson: The Apostrophe (') Rule

In Mi'kmaw, the apostrophe serves as a lengthener. It indicates to the reader that the sounds for vowels must be longer. This rule applies to the letters L, M & N as well.

This is crucial in Mi'kmaw because a long vowel sound changes the meaning of a word completely - see the example in the graphic.

Kesalul (without apostrophes) means - I love you.
Ke'sa'lul (with apostrophes) means - I'm throwing you in fire.
&
Epit (without an apostrophe) means - Person is sitting.
E'pit (with an apostrophe) means - Woman

Siawa'tinej L'nui'suti - Let's keep our language going!
