Venus Envy turned 19 on June 23! Tonight, we’re headed back to the early aughts to explore the sonic roots of this little radio show. There is some folk, a few female-fronted rock bands and some trio hop. On tonight’s episode of Venus Envy, we’re doing something a little different. Part bedtime story, part jukebox musical, tonight’s show spins a tale of a young woman who finds herself and then loses herself in order to find herself again. Take a generous amount of Greek mythology, throw in some familiar archetypes, lyrical songwriting, and powerhouse vocals, and you’ve got a tale fit for a Queen (of the underworld.) They don’t have to play by the rules. They know what they want, and they’re not afraid to go out and get it. They have their own damn castles and most of all, they have POWER. Just a reminder that tomorrow, August 17th, UMFM will be undergoing some work on our antenna located on top of the Richardson Building and will be off the air for an extended period during that day to facilitate the work.
We apologize in advance for the inconvenience and assure you that the work is necessary to our broadcast capacity and endeavour to have everything back up and running on the 17th as soon as possible. As a condition of the work, we will be undergoing some mandatory testing through Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) once the work is complete for a period of 3 weeks. You will notice that there is intermittent station identification notifications that will happen every 30 minutes during these 3 weeks.

Tonight’s show is a re-airing of an episode I put together last summer in response to the Black Lives Matter demonstrations against police brutality and racism in all its forms. February is Black History Month, and I think it’s good to look critically at our recent history as well as the historic times we’re living through. Plus, the show tonight will be celebrating the music of an eclectic group of Black women! I put a few resources in the stories so definitely check those out and let’s keep the conversation going.
