The salmon run is one of natures truly amazing events with millions of salmon fighting against the flow of the rivers to return to the streams that they hatched in, to spawn, and then die. It is this cycle that provides nutrients for the entire forest surrounding the rivers that salmon spawn jn.

The largest lake in Alberta is Lake Claire. Lake Claire is a whopping 1,436 square kilometres.

The warmest lake for swimming in the province is down south at Lake Newell.

Blue-green algae can bloom on lakes, ponds and dugouts across Canada and knowing the signs can help keep you safe this summer. Scummy globs on the surface of the water that are blue-green, greenish brown, pinkish-red in colour with a musty, grassy smell is blue-green algae. All contact with water contaminated with the algae should be avoided and if contact is made with you or your animal, wash the contact spot immediately. If contact is made, symptoms could be skin irritation, rash, sore throat, red eyes, hay fever symptoms, fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If you notice these symptoms in yourself, your kid or your animal you should call your physician and veterinarian.

Water safety is important and knowing blue-green algae when you see it will help you have a safe summer in the water!
