Meet our next guest, Carly Morrison!

Carly began her nursing career 9 years ago in oncology and since then has worked in acute medicine, palliative care, and home and community health. Following a passion to travel, she completed specialty certifications such as RN First Call, Contraception Management, ACLS, and TNCC, packed her bags, and began her journey as a remote primary care nurse traveling across Canada’s Arctic and northern territories. From working long shifts in-50 celsius in Nunavut, driving across ice highways in NWT, to stitching sled dog bites in Yukon, northern work was never short of an adventure. Working in collaborative care with the Indigenous populations throughout the north humbled Carly and incited a passion to establish health equity across the country. This work has inspired her to pursue further education as a Nurse Practitioner at Uvic, from which she graduates this month. Carly currently lives in Squamish, B.C., and enjoys hiking biking, skiing, and dancing.

Don’t miss Carly’s episode tomorrow! We’ll chat about changing roles in nursing and how she has done all the things she has done in her nursing career!

And we’re LIVE!🎙🩺

Episode 1 is now live and available for you to listen on Apple Podcasts and Spotify!
Listen as I talk with Colleen Hinkkala about Trauma Informed Care.

What is Trauma Informed Care?

It’s changing the narrative from “what’s wrong” to “what happened to you” and using that to better support patients as a nurse.

In this episode we talk with Colleen Hinkkala, a RN and nursing instructor at BCIT, to learn how to recognize trauma to avoid retraumatizing the patient, as a nurse and how to better acknowledge what happened to the patient, and how it affects how they behave today and their decisions.

Hey, I’m Anthem, a registered nurse and the host of Working Short.
I started my career as an addiction support worker and eventually pursued a nursing degree to grow my passion for learning and caring for people in vulnerable situations. Now I am a High Acuity trained Registered Nurse on a thoracic and general surgery unit, in the greater Vancouver area. I’ve found that nursing feeds my extroverted energy, love of learning, and need for genuine human connection.
When i’m not nursing, I love getting lost in the trees with my golden retriever Barkley, or i’m in the kitchen curating a charcuterie board to share with a friend over a bottle of BC red🍷. I am fuelled by coffee, being an auntie, and the wise words of my favourite author Kelly Corrigan.
Working Short was sparked by the idea and hope that together we can build a community that can relate to the best and worst days of being a nurse. To talk, learn, laugh, and support each other in the way that only those who have been there can really do.
