Dandelions and Roses Let's talk about things that religion has taught you or that the institution of church has ingrained in you that have taken root.

Then we can decide if it is a dandelion that needs to be taken out before it takes over or a rose that can be lovingly tended

Early this week I gathered with my boys and went to one of my best friends Brian's beautiful yard. Brian made a spiritual space in which I could mourn my loss and to move towards my future, wherever that takes me.
Join me as I talk about grief after a loss, the busyness and waiting that follows and the release that can come after saying good-bye and accepting this new trajectory.

Please like the video and subscribe to my channel. Thank you.

Have you ever had a life-changing event that takes you from your anticipated trajectory? Something like an accident, a medical condition like a stroke or hea...

Those who wield the cross
like a weapon
and those who hold up the bible
as a shield
are winning.
I always had faith.
I had faith in a loving God
and I want so much for
others to know that love
that I became a priest.
But I quickly found that
the loving God I knew,
the God who loved me,
wasn't what was being preached.
And I tried to change the tide.
For years.
And I failed.
Because
Those who wield the cross
like a weapon
and those who hold up the bible
as a shield
are winning.
Their voices are drowning out
the words of love and inclusion
that were uttered millennia ago
by a man, they claim to follow.
If you don't believe like them,
If you don't accept their truth,
If you don't hate like them
(all dressed up in loving righteousness)
They beat you with the cross
and hold up the bible to shield
against any argument.
And they, in their righteousness
prevent me from finding
comfort in the words I once held dear,
or in the symbols I once held as holy.
Well done.
You win.
I'm out.

To be loved but not fully known is comforting but superficial.
To be fully known and not loved is our greatest fear.
To be fully known and fully loved is how we are loved by God.

And our dogs ❤️❤️

On the church calendar today is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. It is supposed to be a time of reflection through 40 days culminating with the celebration of the risen Christ at Easter.

These Christian traditions are full of symbolism. The ashes are created by burning the palm crosses from the year before that had been used for Christ's entrance to Jerusalem the week before he died. (Did you know that Jesus never slept in Jerusalem?)

Years ago I would go downtown to Stephen Ave. In my robes and collar with my ashes and anyone who wanted to stood before me at the imposition of ashes.

"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return".

As we are confronted with our mortality we try to become more alive. If you hear people who have come close to death and lived, you'll hear them talk about becoming more alive...more grateful, more present, more appreciative of everyday miracles. This is what Ash Wednesday is meant to do for all of us. Remember to live fully. To love compassionately. And to remember that this life is finite...

I once presided at a graveside funeral because the person was part of the LGBTQ+ community and her priest had refused to do the service.
I knew that love is love is love and that God doesn't discriminate like humans do.
I was told I wasn't believing right.

I once used the words " Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer" instead of Father, Son and Holy Ghost during the eucharistic prayer.
I was told that the bread and wine hadn't been properly sanctified.
I heard you aren't believing right.

I have never had a clear theology of hell or of an opposing deity to God referred to as Satan or the Devil. I heard a quote that said that you can't believe in one without the other.
What I heard was that I was believing wrong all these years.

If your church extends an invitation for a community lunch but then puts limits on how much people can eat when the unhoused folks show up, you might want to rethink your church.

In response to people that tell me I have to "get right with Jesus" I say that Jesus and I are fine, it's the religious institutions that proport to speak the "truth" that I take issue with.

Leviticus! Clobber passage number 2! I'll include a couple of links in the comments about the passages that I refer to in this video, along with a book recommendation about the 613 laws in Judaism.

The seven gotcha passages series. The first video in this series is about the well known story of S***m and Gomorrah, one of the most famous passages used against the LGBTQ+ community. It's not as well known as you think, and you've been lied to!

Some of the times I was told that I'm not a Christian.. and why I'm ok with that!

Before recording this I chatted with my neighborhood about the great deals he found on groceries (omg how i hate these conversations) and then I told him I was recording...then he brought me oranges. Started recording again...he brought me some kind of strange celebration cake ... then he said he'd be gardening out back. So. Yeah. Lots of ladder rattling. He has 6 of them 🙄
Sorry about the sound!

Welcome to Dandelions and Roses! In the videos that I'll be posting I'll be tackling some of the unhealthy parts of our faith journey that have taken root to see if we can find a new way of understanding. I want you to start to tend the good things in life; in your relationships, in your spiritual journey, and in yourself, to move towards a more healthy way of living.

Let's pull out those dandelions and let the roses flourish!
