A Word about The Heard

So what is The Heard?

Fun fact: it’s the first podcast that’s being hosted by a sitting MLA. In this case, our host is David Shepherd, music man, avid cyclist and MLA for Edmonton-Centre. But more than that, The Heard is about helping Albertans make sense of their world. Alberta is going through a lot of changes right now, and there are a lot of hot issues. Our province is still recovering from the worldwide crash of the price of oil, and there are lots of people still out of work.

We’ve seen a lot of changes in our political landscape, having elected our first non-conservative government in 44 years and then swinging back the other way, so we’ve seen some big shifts in policy and priorities in how your taxpayer dollars are being spent.

And both globally and locally, we’ve seen a rise in political polarization, prejudice, racism and hate crimes.

It can be hard to make sense of it all. As an MLA, David has spoken to a lot of people who have a lot of questions about the issues facing the province, what is happening in government, and how that connects to their day-to-day lives.

David saw that people felt disconnected from the government, and from those elected to represent them.

So he decided to try to change that. He decided to bring government back down to the people, to pull back the curtain and try to bridge the gap between Albertans, the issues and their elected representatives.

And that’s what The Heard is going to be about. A chance to talk to you about what’s happening under the Legislature dome and how it connects to issues you care about - the things you *hear* every day.

We’re going to talk about a ton of stuff, from education to the economy, to our health care system and what’s going on there, to changing demographics, the rise in prejudice and hate crimes - all the things that we think about or talk about with our friends but where we need a bit more information to help us out. Politics, social issues, community and cultural events - it’s all going to be part of The Heard. It sounds quite serious, but don’t worry, we’re going to have some fun. We’ll have great guests and work in a enough fun that you won’t even notice you’re learning something - we promise.
