Epilepsy in Haiti: Assessment, Treatment, and the Path Forward

Rationale: Worldwide, there are an estimated 50 million people with epilepsy (PWE), and nearly 80% of PWE live in low and middle-income countries such as Haiti. Haiti has a population of 11.4 million, and one specialized epilepsy center, the Epilepsy Clinic of Port-au-Prince (CLIDEP), serves the entire country. This results in a treatment gap for PWE in Haiti, a Caribbean nation where 59% of people live below the poverty threshold, and the average income is less than $2.41 per day. Two prior studies have focused on epilepsy patterns among Haitian children seen at CLIDEP.1,2 We present the first assessment of Haiti’s epilepsy burden to include children and adults.

I graduated from medical school with honorable mention. 5 th of a promotion of 133 students, my journey at the faculty was a very beautiful adventure.

First of all, I want to thank God who has always guided me. Then I want to thank the members of my family especially my wonderful Mother, my brother and my sister, my friends and teachers who have always supported me.

I also want to thank the different groups and associations in which I worked, namely the promotion committee for 7 years, the Haitian association of medical students, BIG BANG Santé, Hult Prize Foundation, Rotary International and all the others . They showed me that we learn much more by serving others than by being served.

To all the people who believe in me, I will always do my best to make you proud!
