Some of the most interesting information about my ancestors comes from documents detailing what they ate. The 1686 Acadian Census, for example, shows my ancestor Alexis Doucet at four years old living in Port Royal with his parents and seven brothers and sisters on “5 arpents of cultivable land with 9 cattle, 10 sheep and eight pigs.”1 The census detailed our ancestors’ cattle and livestock along with the cultivated land because those elements were the primary elements of wealth in North America at that time....

My Acadian ancestors ate well by raising cattle, sheep and pigs and by cultivating vegetables on land reclaimed from the Bay of Fundy.

Marie-Josèphe Angélique, the enslaved woman blamed for the fire of 1734, will be remembered within the Place de Montrealais.

For the first time, I successfully completed the National Novel Writing Month challenge of completing 50,000 words towards a new novel in a month. And before the month was even over! Previous years were not so successful, although I've always felt that it's more than useful to participate in the challenge even when you fail, as I wrote the first time I participated in 2020…...

Just finished riding 1000 km to raise money for cancer. The challenge ends today, but I believe my page remains open for another month if you didn't get a chance to make a donation and you'd like to. Simard and Laura Howardyoudo who helped raise the bar on making this month fun. It was super tough but we did it!

Only two days left to raise money for cancer research in memory of my mom. So far, more than $2000 raised, thanks to generous friends and family. Still have to ride quite a bit to make my goal. (Note: the photo app is correct for the km but not the day. This is actually day 29 of the challenge.)

My grandfather was 26 years old when Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King recommended the country declare war on Germany in a radio speech on Sunday, September 3, 1939. Seven days later, Canada officially declared war on Germany and created the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Special Reserve, which was placed on active service. I’m not sure what Grandpa Joseph Isidore Alfred Gabriel Arial was doing that year, but he probably lived in Edmonton after his last known job as a radio inspector ended in February 1936....

Joseph Isidore Alfred Gabriel Arial stayed in Canada during WWII to keep the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) operational.

Remembrance Day has been an important landmark in my life since childhood. It's a day to remember all the people who died fighting for freedom in various wars by staying silent for a full minute at 11 a.m. This year, I'll be streaming the live service in Montreal. Reading In Flanders' Fields by John McCrae and wearing a poppy between the last Friday in October and today are also important traditions that honour the men and women who served in various military units....
