Episode 5 is now LIVE! On this episode we discuss the effects of colourism on Black women and how to maintain our peace. We had an amazing conversation with !
Badria Abubaker is a multimedia journalist based in Calgary, Alberta. Most of Badria’s reporting revolves around social issues and racial inequalities. Although she enjoys reporting through all types of mediums, her passion lies within film production. Her first documentary film (Black Hair) released in September of 2018, dove into the politics of afro-textured hair. Badria has since used her films to shed light on the trials and tribulations that the African diaspora population continues to experience. She hopes to continue to produce hard-hitting films that advocate for Black voices and experiences.

“Colorism is more than having a preference. It is a social mobility tool heavily reflected in the music catalogs of some of the most influential Black men. Even though Black womxn are more socially mobile than Black men (Brookings Institute), Black womxn remain the quintessential American symbol for poverty. Black single mothers especially are blamed for many of the problems that plague the Black community (Moynihan Report). It is not a mystery why Black men exclusively uplift womxn who look nothing like them. Besides white supremacist indoctrination, Black men are able to selfishly invest in their own images by aligning themselves with whiteness and lightness.”
