As a freelancer, being a Jack of all trades is a must. ⚡️

If you’re a writer, you’re most likely splitting your time between writing long-form content, crafting compelling web copy, and dabbling with the occasional social post.

I write 50,000 words a month but reading books can be difficult… 👀
 
I’m a marketer through and through and that means I understand the IMPORTANCE of setting smart goals.
 
However, when it came time to write down my goals for 2024, I decided to give myself some grace with one goal in particular.
 
Instead of getting granular and making sure this goal was smart, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely, I decided to keep it simple.
 
This year one of my most important goals is to simply “read books”.  🤯
 
While this may sound simple to some, this is an incredible feat for someone with ADHD.
 
Despite reading and writing THOUSANDS of words for work, I’ve never been able to sit down and read for pleasure.
 
It’s not because I don’t love words or value a good story because crafting compelling stories is one of the things I’m most passionate about.
 
It’s simply because my brain works differently. 🧠
 
To kick things off, I’m starting with these two books because in classic fashion... I couldn’t choose just one.

What does career development look like as a freelancer? 🤔

As a young professional it can be easy to get swept up in what it means to be successful.

If you work in a traditional 9-5 environment, you most likely gauge success by climbing the proverbial corporate ladder. You might graduate from direct report to manager, and you may even get a pay raise.

But how do you gauge success as a freelancer? I suppose it’s different for everyone. This year, I’m gauging success by:

👉 Fostering Long-Term Relationships
Working on one off projects can be exihlirating, but nothing feels better than partnering with great people, time and time again. Last year I had the opportunity to meet some incredible people that I’m looking forward to growing with. So, here’s to more long-term working relationships in 2024. 🚀

👉 Prioritizing Freedom and Flexibility
As freelancer, it can be difficult to turn down jobs. Especially if you don’t know where your next paycheck is coming from. This year, I’m prioritizing working on projects that align with my goals. I want to work on more complex projects that require innovative solutions. And I want to do it with spectacular creatives by my side.

Last year was an excellent year. I worked with incredible clients, grew as an entrepreneur, and laid the groundwork for 2024.
 
While I was busy working behind the scenes I failed to show up. I worked on so many social media strategies that mine fell through the cracks. I wrote so much content for other businesses that I didn’t have the capacity to create my own.

When talking about diversity, equity and inclusion, the main groups that many employers look at are gender, race, sexual orientation and disability, but what about neurodiversity?

Conditions such as ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and autism are all on the neurodiversity spectrum with an estimated 15% to 20% of the population being neurodivergent. Despite these resounding statistics, many workplaces fail to create inclusive environments that allow those with neurodivergent tendencies to thrive.

Personally, it wasn’t until I stepped out of the confines of a traditional 9-5 role that I began to thrive in business.

Entrepreneurship has allowed me to step into what makes me different, making it possible for me to succeed despite my differences in social preferences, ways of learning, and ways of communicating. Being a freelancer allows me to be ME.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve been able to work from anywhere. This is a lifestyle that I once could have only dreamt of and that’s why I hold each one of my clients near and dear to my heart.

Did anyone else wake up this week and realize that we’re already in the fifth month?

If you’re anything like me, immediate panic set in. At the beginning of every year, I sit down and write out my goals, so I know I have to do X to achieve X. To my surprise, this year is already almost halfway over!

Despite having one of my best years yet, I still have so much to achieve. It’s easy to get ahead of yourself and worry about how much you have yet to accomplish but it’s important to step back and reflect on how far you’ve come. If no one’s told you yet, you’re doing great! Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses. Or if you’re in Ottawa, the tulips! 🌷

Here’s to doubling down and achieving your goals. We still have 8 months to knock it out of the park! 🏆

Are you operating within your zone of genius? 🤔

I recently wrote an article for a client about “Finding your Zone of Genius” and it made me step back and reflect on my personal journey.

Coined by author Gay Hendricks, The Zone of Genius refers to a state of being that encapsulates areas in which a person thrives that align with what they are deeply passionate about. In essence, your zone of genius comes to life when your natural talents bring you joy and wealth.

It’s times like these that I feel incredibly grateful to do what I do. Not only do I have the opportunity to learn on a daily basis, but I also have the privilege of operating within my zone of genius.

The number one reason why people fail to operate in their zone of genius is because of their self-imposed limitations meaning the only thing standing between you and pure bliss is self-doubt.

People ask me why I work so much. The short answer is gratitude. 🙏

I feel incredibly lucky to wake up everyday and do what I love and I’m even more thankful that I have the opportunity to make a living on my own.

I feel lucky to work and even luckier that my work affords me an incredible life with the people I love.

I get to wake up everyday and set my own hours. I get to plan last minute vacations or getaways with my partner or friends.

I’m able to take time off if I have a family emergency or a friend in need. I’m able to work as much as I want and double down on my goals. These are things that I wouldn’t be able to do in a 9-5.

If you’ve been looking for a sign to hop on the entrepreneurship train this is it. It only goes up from here. 🚀

It’s almost been 10 months since I’ve been working for myself fulltime and I wouldn’t change it for the world. During this time, I’ve been incredibly busy and as a result, I’ve neglected to market myself and keep my community in tune with some of the exciting projects I’ve been working on.
 
I’ve worked on a wide range of clients in sectors across the gamut including a live stream attendee engagement platform provider, a cloud-based suite solution for enterprise collaboration, a variety of technology service providers, and many others in the food and beverage, medical aesthetics, and SaaS space.
 
Working for myself has given me the opportunity to capitalize on my ADHD brain that runs a mile a minute by providing me with so many wonderful opportunities to work on new and exciting projects with great people. All that to say, if you struggle to conform to a traditional 9-5, there’s always a silver lining.
