Dangote Makes N460bn In A Day, Overtakes Four On Billionaires' List

Nigerian business tycoon, Aliko Dangote, overtook two Russians, one Chinese and an Indian on the billionaires' list on Monday, after making N460bn in a day.

The Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Group made the profit following increased demand for Dangote Cement, beating his fellow billionaires by earning about $100 million.

He maintains a majority share at his Cement company, following the company's announcement of a significant share buyback two weeks ago.

According to Bloomberg Billionaire Index, Dangote remains Africa’s richest man, a feat he has maintained for 12 years in a row.

Breaking News: INEC Postpones governorship, state assembly elections to March 18

The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the governorship and state assembly elections till March 18.

The exercise was previously scheduled to hold on March 11, but INEC, citing a logistics crisis stemming from BVAS configuration and transportation, said the election could not hold again as scheduled following a meeting of its executives on Wednesday evening.

“The elections were postponed to allow one more week for preparations,” an official familiar with the meeting told Peoples Gazette by telephone on Wednesday night. “We should be able to get everything in order before March 18.”

The meeting was still underway at INEC headquarters in Abuja as of the time of filing this report.

The commission had convinced the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to vary its order granting Peter Obi of the Labour Party and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar permission to inspect the election materials on the premise that it had to reconfigure the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) for the conduction of the polls this Saturday.

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is presently leading a protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

The demonstration, attended by PDP bigwigs and supporters, is to protest the result of the presidential election.

Iyrochia Ayu, the PDP national chairman; Ifeanyi Okowa, the vice-presidential candidate of the party; and Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto state governor, are also present at the protest.

The PDP members began the march from Legacy House and are heading towards the INEC head office.

Supreme Court Orders Old N200, N500, N1,000 Notes To Remains In Circulation Till Dec 31

The Supreme Court ordered that the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes remain in circulation until December 31, 2023, on Friday.

The supreme court invalidated the Federal Government's policy to redesign the naira, declaring it to be in violation of the 1999 Constitution.

The Supreme Court rendered a decision in the lawsuit brought against the Federal Government regarding the revaluation of the naira.

Sixteen states of the Federation filed the lawsuit to challenge the legality of the policy's implementation.

PHOTOS: Buhari visits Maiduguri market destroyed by fire, donates relief items

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday visited the popular Monday market in Maiduguri, Borno state, which was destroyed by fire on Sunday.

Buhari was accompanied by Babagana Zulum, governor of the state.

Kashim Shettima, vice-president-elect, and Ali Modu Sherrif, a former governor of the state were also among those who accompanied the president on the visit.

Buhari was also at the palace of Abubakar El-Kanemi, Shehu of Borno, to register his profound condolences to indigenes of the state who lost property and means of livelihood in the disaster.

A mad man handed his cheque to a bank teller and said, " I would like to withdraw N5000..."
The male teller told the mad man, for withdrawal less than 10,000, please use these ATM.

The mad man asked, why?
The teller irritably told the mad man, " These are rules. Please leave if there is no other matter. There is a queue behind you. The Teller then returned the cheque to the mad man.

The mad man remained silent. But he returned the cheque to the Teller and said, " Please help me withdraw all the money I have."

The Teller was astonished when he checked the account balance of the mad man, he nodded his head, knelt down and said to the mad man.
My apologies sir, you have 3.5 billion in your account and our bank does not have so much cash currently. Could you make an appointment and come again tomorrow?"

The mad man then asked, "How much am I able to withdraw now?"

The Teller told him, any amount up to 300,000.

The mad man then told the Teller that he wanted to withdraw 300,000 from his account.

The Teller did so quickly and handed it to the mad man respectfully.

The mad man kept N5000 in his bag and asked the Teller to deposit the balance of N295000 back into his account.

The Teller was dumbfounded.

Rules are inflexible but we humans can be flexible when the situation requires us to be.

We should not treat people based on their look or how they are dressed.
Rather, we should treat everyone with respect. And never be too quick to judge a book by his cover.

*Obaseki plans new airport in Edo North*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki is in talks with investors, development partners and other stakeholders on the construction of an airport in Edo North Senatorial District to open up the area and rev up economic activities in the state.

Obaseki, who disclosed this during an enlarged meeting of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members across wards and local government areas in the district, said the government is working assiduously to improve the state’s transportation network.

The governor said: “There are some key projects that we want to implement in Edo North. There are major investors talking to us now and want to come into the state. We have huge opportunities in the areas of agriculture, mining and transportation.

"One of the major things that I want to do is to build an airport. Access is key, and if people can fly in directly, it will improve the economy of the state.”

He continued: "We have been working on improving the transportation network in Edo State; we have done some studies and found out that an Airport in Edo North is feasible, particularly given the level of investment that we are making in that direction.

“Don't forget that there are two cement plants in the state, major universities and several other economic opportunities that are involved, and to get people there, we need an airport to make access easy. We are in discussion with the relevant authorities already.”

On his part, a party chieftain and former deputy governor of the state, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, commended the developmental strides of the governor, pledging the support, commitment and loyalty of party faithful from Edo North Senatorial District to his administration.

*Edo to strengthen tax laws, eliminate cash payment to tackle evasion, others*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has said his government will enact new laws and strengthen existing laws to improve revenue collection, and address tax evasion and other corrupt practices in the system.

Obaseki disclosed this while addressing participants during a stakeholders’ engagement of the Edo State Transition Committee with artisan groups at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.

He said his government is working to eliminate all forms of cash payment for taxes across the State as it will minimise corrupt practices in the system.

Obaseki noted: "As a government, we are looking at all the processes of tax collection; we will ensure no more cash tax payment, as it will enable us to check corruption in the system.

“We are simplifying the tax system in the State to encourage more people to key into the system. You can commit crime in America and go free but not with tax evasion.”
"If we can do so more with the little we get as tax, imagine what we can do when more people pay their taxes,” he noted.

The governor continued: "We are trying to maintain a sense of accountability and openness to our people.

"The problems that we are facing didn't just start today and can't be solved in just one day but both the Government and the people must do things right to solve the problems facing us.

"We are going to work together with you to ensure that we have constant interaction. Our problem is not money, but how effectively we can use your money. When you contribute or pay your taxes, you want to see that we use it to make you proud; we can't do anything without you.

"We are not like some states that have huge IGR or very high allocations but the little that we get, we can show you the plan or what we have achieved with the taxes.”

On his part, Edo State Head of Service, Barr. Anthony Okungbowa, noted, “This is an interactive session with you because you are very important to this administration.
Feel free to open up to the Government to enable us know where we need to improve and make life better for the people of the State.”

Also, a trader in edible foods, Mr. John Ojo, said, "I want to call on the Government to set up a body with credible persons, which should be made known to traders and other artisan groups where complains can be lodged as this move will help sanitize the system for more efficiency and effectiveness.

Beaking: Tb Joshua Is Dead

Mr. Temitope Balogun Joshua, commonly referred to as T. B. Joshua, is dead.

TB Joshua is the Leader and Founder of The Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN.

Reports by an online medium and a tweet by former Minister of Aviation made additional reports to that effect.
When Vanguard contacted a member of the church, she was in tears.

She said it was true. She said: “The death occurred when the cleric left ‘the mountain’ to minister to the people, which was televised live on Saturday.”

However, she said a few minutes later, TB Joshua left. Which was unusual.

They were then told “the man of God said he can no longer attend to us.”

Probably that was when it happened.

Osun bank robbers missed bullion van conveying cash –Source

The armed robbers who attacked branches of First Bank and Access Bank in Apomu and Ikire areas of Osun State on Wednesday targeted a bullion van bringing cash to the banks, PUNCH Metro has learnt.

It was, however, gathered that the robbers missed their target, as they had already been repelled before the bullion van bringing money arrived in the town.

The well coordinated attacks, which took place at four different spots in the two towns, left no fewer than seven people dead.

*Ambrose Alli varsity: Obaseki inaugurates special intervention team, charges them on restoration of AAU’s lost glory*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Friday, inaugurated the 10-man special intervention team set up to exercise all the powers and functions of the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University, with a charge for them to advance government’s vision to reposition the institution to meet global standards.

The inauguration of the special intervention team, headed by the Managing Director of Schlumberger Nigeria Ltd, Mr. Andrew Olotu, was performed by Governor Obaseki at the Government House, Benin City.

Other members of the Special Intervention team include Barr. Patrick E. Inegbedion, Mr. Uyi Izekor, Prof. Esther Ikuoria, Mrs. Imo Okundaye, Mr. Emmanuel Etomi, Mr. Osen Iyahen, Mr. Yusuf Mohammed, Comr. Austin Osakwe, with Mr. Oaihimire Idemudia Edetalehn as Secretary of the team.

The governor, during the inauguration, said that his administration has put together a very experienced and formidable intervention team to come up with ideas on how the university could operate in order to restore the institution’s lost glory.

According to him, “We are working tirelessly in repositioning all our institutions. We started with the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme in our primary schools.

“All our primary six children can now read and write with the introduction of the EdoBEST programme. For the sustainability of our schools, AAU must work.”

"We are going to ensure that we upgrade the Ambrose Alli University to meet global standards, so that it will save us from sending our children abroad for studying; that is what we have in mind,” he noted.

The governor added: "You are going to help us revive the regulation governing the service of staff of the university in line with the recommendations of the Nigeria University Commission.

"You are also going to develop a means of funding the university outside government resources by developing a strategy that will help reduce overdependence on government and separate politics from the university.”

Obaseki further charged the committee to create industrial harmony between the various unions and the school management.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Special Intervention Team thanked the governor for giving them the opportunity to serve in such a capacity.

“We will take your mandate seriously; my team and I will not fail you. We will do our best to bring our experiences to bear,” he assured.
