You might think you know what a podcast editor and podcast producer are, but do you really?
Let me break it down for you.
People often ask me about the differences between podcast producers and editors. What do I need, a podcast editor or a producer? And my answer is…it depends.
If you are like the majority of my clients who are new to the podcasting world, my answer would be that you need an editor. Especially if you are in the first year of airing your podcast. An editor will save you a ton of time as you won’t have to worry about audio editing, learning the technical skills needed to air a good sounding show, and maintaining a consistent audio quality. Your focus should be on your content, not the audio.
While more seasoned podcasters might need a producer to help grow their show and build a loyal audience. A producer drives the content, manages all aspects of the production, and ensures the podcasts align with its creative vision.
An easy way to describe the roles: ** Producers direct, editors execute.
Although many podcasters do both roles, outsourcing these roles can significantly increase the chances that your podcast will top the charts.
As for me, how would I describe myself? Editor? Producer?
It’s pretty clear if you have been following me for a while that my goal with Cardinal Studio is to produce the highest quality-sounding podcasts out there. However, I can easily switch hats and also help with the producing side of things.

I know I might offend a lot of podcasters with this post, but hear me out.
A lot of you probably use tools like Descript and other similar softwares to edit your podcasts. Sure, they are great tools, but there’s one thing that I would like to point out.
They are not AUDIO tools!
Sure, most of them have some audio functions, but they are mainly transcription tools. They’ll get the job done OK, but the audio will still be subpar compared to using a dedicated DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like ProTools (my secret weapon).
Even the basic DAWs will provide advanced features that Descript and others don’t have like:

🔊Advanced trimming and editing tools;
🔊Crossfades;
🔊Volume automation;
🔊Multi track editing;
🔊Extensive sound plug-in options;
🔊Panning features;
🔊And many more.

Trying to find a good microphone for podcasting can be very confusing. USB, XLR, dynamic, condenser, polar patterns....OH MY!
Let me break it down for you once and for all.
🎙USB dynamic microphone with a cardioid pattern.
That's all you need!
There are many more quality mics on the market, but I can personally vouch for the 3 above.
Although, the SM7B will require an audio interface as it has no USB connection. But at that point, you are in the big leagues and can most likely afford a quality interface.

Yesterday, one of my amazing clients hit a major milestone: 1,000 downloads for her podcast! A massive shout out to her for achieving this feat in just a couple of months since launching.
Now, let's unravel the significance of those 1,000 downloads. Buckle up as we delve into the stats:
🎤32 downloads per new episode puts her in the top 50% of all podcasts.
🎤122 downloads, the top 25%.
🎤484 downloads, the top 10%.
🎤1,153 downloads, the top 5%.
🎤5,277 downloads, the elite top 1%.
But what does 'all podcasts' mean, you ask? As of October 2023, there are a staggering 4,250,179 registered podcasts worldwide. Sure, not all are active, and the stats can be a bit hazy, but that's the podcasting landscape for you.
Now, let's circle back to Carley and what these numbers mean for her:
🌟She's soared to the top 20%-25% bracket in just a few months;
🌟1,000 people have downloaded and tuned in to her podcast;
🌟Her audience is expanding every week;
🌟More people are discovering her and her fantastic services; and
🌟Drumroll, please... Her business is booming!
Sure, download numbers aren't the podcasting endgame. Growth in podcasting and any long form content is a marathon, not a sprint. I often advise my clients not to fixate on early download stats. But hitting the 20%-25% mark in just a couple of months? Or, how often do you have the opportunity to talk to 1,000 people in a room?
Now, those are numbers you just can't ignore!

Want to know the proper microphone placement for podcast recording? I see a lot of people using improper mic placement and techniques online. And it drives me crazy! Without proper mic placement, your podcast will sound...well, I hate to say it, but it will sound TERRIBLE! So here's a quick cheat sheet. The distance between the microphone and your mouth should be anywhere between 4 to 6 inches. Start 6 inches away and move closer if you want a more fuller sound. Pro tip: do test recordings and experiment to see what sounds best. It will take a couple of tries, but it will be worth your time. When the podcast swear jar is overflowing, it's time to edit! Here's a quick video showing a couple of different ways I deal with swearing while editing a clients podcast. 1. If my client wants to keep it PG, I manually remove any nasty words. I make sure to clean up the edits so the audio sounds natural. 2. Some clients prefer having a sound effect to "bleep" out an odd f#ck or s#it. It can also form part of their sonic branding. In this case, I duck the original audio under a chosen sound effect. "Quack" in this example. Duck, quack...get it? 😀 3. F#ck that S#it! Sometimes, leaving them in is the way to go! I just tell my clients mot to forget to rate their show with an explicit warning when they publish their podcast. There you have it! Podcast editing is a crucial part of any successful podcast and should not be ignored. How do you feel about swearing in a podcast?
I could do this with my eyes closed. No, really, no joking. The last couple of months, I've been editing my clients' podcasts with almost no eye sight. Nothing serious, but I will require surgery at the end of the month to correct my vision. The reason why I've been able to continue working is because of my experience and the countless hours spent in the studio honing my skills as a musician, producer, and podcast editor. Yes, editing, mixing, and mastering are skills that your average podcaster may not need. But knowing what EQ settings to use, compression ratios, broadcast standards, noise canceling techniques, and all the things that go into making great sounding podcasts come from an experienced podcast editor.
