Company B Jazz Band is supremely proud to announce the coming release of our brand new album”Charmed Bad Luck”! This album was set to be released at Frankie’s Jazz Club on May 3rd, but due to current restrictions we weren’t able to throw the party of our dreams. We however are just too darn excited to wait to share this wonderful new record with everyone, so starting Monday May 18th, we’ll be releasing a new track each week!

A happy, healthy and mega-creative 2020 to you from us. Some December highlights attached. Check out this epic tweetstorm of advice for artists from Sean @ Drowned in Sound:

https://twitter.com/seaninsound/status/1212393417524830212?s=20

"✍️ Find a succinct sentence (or 2) that sums up the atmosphere of what you do.
- reference the sorta acts you might like to support or films/shows/life moments you could soundtrack
- invent a genre
- amplify any truly unique retail about you/the track
👀 Research the media you’d like to be covered by.
- Try to find 3 key potential fans who cover new music and slowly build a rapport (don’t deluge them)
- remember people at bigger mags need to be commissioned by an editor
- read / listen / explore..."

Lots more valuable advice in the link.

One of my first sessions engineering at Crew was with a male producer of a college-age female vocalist. I didn't know the producer, he found us online and booked the studio.

After a first pass at the song, the producer went into the live room to talk to the artist while I turned around to adjust equipment. During the few minutes while I was adjusting things, I thought I glimpsed the producer shove or push the artist's shoulder - maybe as a misguided method of getting her to sing more aggressively.

She didn't seem upset, the session carried on, and they were both pleased with the results.

But still something about that moment bothered my gut.

I told this story at our Creative BC Producer's event during the segment on Women in Audio. Thanks to attendees including Red Borrowman, Alexandra Staseson, Charlotte Duggan, and panelists Elisa Pangsaeng, May Guimarães, and Theresa Leonard, the suggestion was made to have some kind of policy statement or code of conduct in place at the studio.

I found We Have Voice's "Code of Conduct to Promote Safe(r) Workplaces in the Performing Arts", applied, and we now have it framed on the studio wall and posted on our site.

It feels good to have this concrete tool in place, and we encourage other studios and performing arts spaces to adopt it.

Billboard magazine noticed us doing this and called to talk about it in relation to this article.

Should go without saying, but these things need to be said: we want artists to feel safe and loved. We have zero tolerance for harassment, bullying, alpha male power plays, boys club BS. We are actively opening doors to more women engineers.

If a situation like the one I mentioned ever occurred again, we feel empowered by the code to promptly talk to the artist and producer, gauge the reaction, and if warranted, cancel the session.

For an overwhelming number of women, the studio feels like an anything-but-safe space -- so artists and executives alike are driving new initiatives to enact real change.

Huge congratulations to Crew clients Snotty Nose Rez Kids on their Polaris Music Prize nomination, and the mighty Haviah Mighty on receiving the prize!

SNRK recorded vocals and mixed much of their album "Trapline" at Crew last winter, with the supremely talented (and chill) Toronto-based producer/engineer Sir KR Moore of Sandbox Studios. Was a blast to assist them and witness their collabs with Brevner, Kimmortal, Boslen, and Chauncey.

Last month, Haviah was in with her trio The Sorority (w/ Lex Leosis & Keysha Fanfair ) recording vocals while on tour, and they greatly impressed us with their talent and vibe. Stoked for her and The Sorority.

Thanks Brodie for choosing us.

And now they're going on a tour together, which will be absolute fire.
