Proud to have been able to attend this year’s TIFF, looking back at all we experienced, we’ve reflected on some of the themes explored throughout the films we chose—our fervent attachments to the land, our (dis)connections to our pasts and histories, and dreaming towards optimistic futures ahead.

We had the pleasure of interviewing:

Executive Producer Leslie Norville on Black Life: Untold Stories series streaming on CBC Gem.

Director Ángeles Cruz on Valentina o La Serenidad, and longtime collaborators Danae Ahuja Aparcio and Myriam Bravo on thé film.

As well as, International Critics Prize Winner (FIPRESCI) Meredith Hama-Brown on her film Seagrass.

Available to read on our profiles page!

For our last edition this year we are look at “In transit/ion” 🫧☁️

🌟 Join us on an exploration of cinematic transitions in our upcoming vlog: "In transit/ion." 🚀

🎥 Film is all about movement, Classics like Russian Ark push the boundaries of motion with a single shot that spans the entirety of the Winter Palace’s history while Moulin Rouge! uses fast cutting to embody the energy of the cabaret. But what really intrigues us is how characters and spaces navigate transitions – those moments of change, of betwixt and between. where nothing is concrete but change is inevitable. 🌌

How does visual media capture these transitions? How do characters, spaces, and environments confront change on the big screen? And what does it all mean for us as the audience? 🧐

If you're a writer with a love for film and are interested in writing for Short ends. Send us your pitches, ideas, and thoughts on transitions in film on the submissions page on our website in the bio by September 30th 📅

For our third edition this year, we are looking at Phantasmagoria. 🔮🌚

Before film, theatres ruled. Today, we associate phantasmagoria with the bizarre, surreal, and imagined. Shots contain unconventional elements that contradict, challenge, or misdirect the audience. It can feel dreamy as if evoking a nostalgic half-thought at once familiar. But it can also be nightmarish. Fears of ghosts, phantoms, and demons converge, and the screen that separates us from them grows thinner with each moment. Phantasmagoria asks you to question your reality and its normalcy. It asks: Is there another way to see the world? 🌌

For our second edition, we are looking at Music! 🎶💫

In the wake of film composer Angelo Badalament’s passing, his long-time friend and collaborator, David Lynch uttered, ‘Today, no music’.

Music, and sound itself, has always served as the emotional rudder of visual media. Its presence moves us. We sing aloud lyrics in the shower or learn to play them on the piano. We associate them with people, places, feelings, moments of time that all move to its powerful rhythm. Yet when absent, it unsettles us. Scenes are stilted and anxiety-producing in the void of sound.

How is music mediated by visuals? What kinds of relationships do we have to music? How does music speak (or sing) to you?

If you’re interested in writing for Short Ends, see our submissions page on our website in the bio and write us a pitch by April 7th.📅
