Cyber attacks have been called “a growing threat to the country’s economy, public infrastructure, power grids, utilities, and healthcare sector,” “a matter of national security’” and a “top concern for Canadians.” But experts say we need to do more to protect ourselves from cyber threats, including having more “boots on the ground’’ in the form of cyber security specialists.

The Regina skyline may not be as iconic as some cities, but it is distinctive in its own right—thanks to Hill Towers I and II that rise from the rolling prairie as you approach the city from any direction. That prairie, those buildings and the province’s love for football have come together this fall to celebrate the arrival of the 109th Grey Cup this week.

Both towers are showing their appreciation for the country’s biggest football game with two massive murals that cannot be missed. The artwork came together through the work of three companies—Harvard Developments, the Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club Inc., and long-time Regina sign maker, Sleek Signs.

Our Fall 2022 cover story takes a look at how these iconic towers got their Grey Cup makeover, and the growing, innovative prairie company that made it happen.

Before Sleek Signs was wrapped Regina’s iconic buildings, it was leading the way in large format digital printing from its start.

Agriculture in Saskatchewan is about a lot more than broad-acre farming. While the ongoing and growing importance of grains, pulses, and oil seeds in feeding and fueling the world is well recognized, Indigenous harvesters in northern Saskatchewan quietly produce top quality ingredients for export and consumption.

Writer Dan Matthews spoke to Tyler Morin at Sakitawak Development, Shaun Soonias at Farm Credit Canada and Nap Gardiner at NWC Wild Rice Company Rice about how Indigenous harvesters are taking a larger ownership role and improving their influence on the value chain and product prices.

There’s an old saying that goes “if you don’t tell your story, someone else will.” That has perhaps never been truer than right now. Regina people are known for their humble, even quiet ways. And while there is a time and place for being humble, now is not the time and this is not the place.

Economic Development Regina Inc. Regina president and CEO Chris Lane knows Regina has an amazing story to tell, and that it’s high time to tell it.

Regina has an amazing story to tell, and it’s high time to tell it. We’ve got the foundation, now it’s time to show, and tell, the world what we’re made of.

This latest special report by Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA) shows that Saskatoon’s growth will be propelled by Indigenous economic reconciliation.

The region has an incredible opportunity for growth at its fingertips. The city’s first economic growth strategy, developed by SREDA, articulates a vision of becoming a leader in Indigenous economic reconciliation.

“Saskatchewan’s ‘three Fs’—food, fuel and fertilizer—are foundational to our economy,” says SREDA president and CEO Alex Fallon. “But I’d argue there should be more than these three so that we include First Nations. Social and economic reconciliation is possibly the most important economic growth opportunity facing this province.”

Located 26 kilometres south of Saskatoon, Whitecap Dakota First Nation (WDFN) is settled neatly among a cozy mix of rolling hills, sand dunes, and the ruggedness of the river valley. One of the few First Nations in Saskatchewan with road signs and street addresses, WDFN is a quiet but bustling community with many new residential and commercial developments. As a relatively small First Nation, with around 700 members, WDFN punches well above its weight economically, which is a success story intimately linked to the character of the Dakota people, the location of the First Nation, and their ongoing quest for self-governance and a sustainable economy.

Writer Dan Matthews tells our Summer 2022 cover story about WDFN and its remarkable achievements on their road to self-governance.

The economic history of Western Canada that we are often told centres around settler survival in a harsh climate, on seemingly empty lands, and includes the harnessing of resources for economic benefit—namely furs and farmland, and later, forestry, minerals, and oil. Left unacknowledged are the centuries of Indigenous labour, ingenuity, and lands that, at first, supported settler survival, and later, enable settler economies to thrive.

Writer Stephanie Danyluk takes a look at the sophisticated and diverse political, economic, and cultural systems of Indigenous peoples that existed, and were relied upon, by settlers when they arrived on the prairies.

By now, we have all heard “land acknowledgements” recognizing the traditional territories of the Indigenous peoples on which we reside. But what about the traditional knowledge and political, economic, and cultural systems on which settler systems relied on to survive?

As the business world changes rapidly, education and training have to keep up with the needs of the modern workforce and it’s true now more than ever. This is creating opportunities in post-secondary education to boost skills in a new way.

A new type of post-secondary training is coming to the forefront—the micro-credential, and you can find it growing here at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan, First Nations University of Canada, and the University of Regina's Centre for Continuing Education.

They’re small modular reactors (SMRs) and they’re potentially the next source of baseload electricity in when conventional coal-fired power plants are phased out in 2030.

Bruce Johnstone tackles the talk of the province - SMRs - and what they can mean for the energy sector and Saskatchewan. He caught up with SaskPower, Cameco Corporation, University of Regina and the Saskatchewan Environmental Society to see what SMRs are all about.
