HATS OFF TO HERONS
by Staff Writers | December 2021

If there is a main idea resonating through North America’s complicated history with its Indigenous birds, it could be said that, the measure to which a species is beautiful to humans, is the same extent to which its life is placed at risk.
In other words, if humans revere you, then frankly, watch out! Unchecked human vanity will devastate your species.

The embarrassing treatment and poaching of the Great Blue Heron in North America, is a case in point.

It was fashion, not hunger, that led to massive Heron slaughtering during the 1800's.

Unregulated poaching tells a gruesome tale born primarily as a byproduct of the fashion industry’s love affair with hat-making.

BUILDING CULTURE ONE CANOE AT A TIME
By Staff Writers | December 2021

The Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini annual canoe build, showcases both the foundational cultural importance of birch bark canoes, known in the Algonquin language as chiman, along with their vital role in contemporary Algonquin skilled-trades apprenticeship.

Over three consecutive weeks, builders Chuck Commanda, and Stephen Hunter, Chief Land Claim Negotiator for Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini, offer demonstrations using an apprenticeship model, rooted in family and youth participation. The ceremony also welcomes contractors and practitioners of other fields to experience Algonquin skilled-trades in action.

DELIGHTING IN THE DODGY : PIRATES WEEK
By. Staff Writers | December 2021

"How a vigilante Canadian merchant captured the hearts and minds of Alexandria Bay, New York"

In Jefferson County, on the opulent St Lawrence river, Alexandria Bay offers surreal, edgy festivals centered around a concept of rogue Americanism. From activist pirates, to Gatsby like moguls, this quaint riverside town challenges societal norms, with eccentricity and finesse.

One such family festival centers around an unlikely vigilante, who has become a cultural anti-hero.
