As a fan of who has all their studio releases, I’ve resorted to buying obscure records from overseas including this copy of American Woman from Japan - part of the Discrete 4-Channel series of popular releases by popular bands.
From Discogs: CD-4 Discrete 4-Channel quadraphonic LP release from 1972 includes an insert with lyrics and tracklist. The inside cover has details of the CD-4 technology.
This release omits ‘969 (The Oldest Man)’ (originally track B1) and ‘8:15’ (originally track B3) from the original stereo LP and US quadraphonic 8-track tape releases, and reshuffles the remaining tracks to balance the playing time between sides.

If you know Winnipeg, you know Rae & Jerry’s! It’s a retro steakhouse that opened in 1957. It’s known for its red leather seats, iconic lounge, and vintage decor. This album features Leon Isenberg and Harry Ellsworth performing live. A big part of my record collection is local artists from Winnipeg/Manitoba, so when I come across little independent/promo gems like this it’s a real treat! It’s still sealed - I’m not sure if I’ll open and listen, or just add it to the collection….

🤩 Picked up this pretty sweet copy of an early single, with ‘This Time Long Ago’ backed by ‘There’s No Getting Away From You’ from 1967. In the original Quality Records sleeve, no less! Around this time, the band was just establishing itself on the Canadian music scene. A couple of years later, in 1969, they would break internationally with their first hit single ‘These Eyes.’

If you’re somewhere in Canada 🇨🇦 I suggest you check out next time they’re on tour. 🎶 A father-and-two-sons trio, they serve up folky beats and tight harmonies. They’ve played our sister business a couple of times, and we picked up this album following their last show.
Collecting records by the big/famous bands is great, but I absolutely LOVE getting records by the local independents. A band can make more money off the sale of one CD/record than thousands of streams on Spotify! So it’s crucial we show them our support!

🤩 I finally picked up the new vinyl from the other day. Romi’s a critically acclaimed blues guitarist and singer/songwriter from Winnipeg. She played back in May but the record wasn’t ready yet. It’s finally in my hands and it was worth the wait! The album’s been well-received and deservedly so. I encourage you to check out ‘Small Victories’ wherever you stream your music - or, better yet, order one of these limited edition albums before they’re gone!

🤩 New record from out now, picked up when they played on the weekend. Great new music, cool white vinyl, and the album title “We Were Born Here, What’s Your Excuse?” is a nod to the Simpsons episode when they went to Winnipeg (swipe 👉)

Benjamin Darvill, known by his stage name Son of Dave, is a Canadian musician and singer–songwriter. He was a member of Grammy award-nominated, Juno award-winning folk rock band Crash Test Dummies in which he played harmonica, mandolin, guitar and percussion before returning to his blues, Beat-Box and harmonica driven solo work in 2000. 🇿🇦 After few days away…the next instalment of my South Africa finds from this is the debut EP from The Dolly Rockers called Consume Me (1992). It’s signed by the band and came with a newspaper article tucked inside - always a nice find! 😯
The Dolly Rockers were formed in 1990 by Greg Donnelly (vocals) with Anthony Bull (bass), Stuart Crawford-Browne (guitar) and Arnold Vermaak (drums). It was this line-up that recorded the earlier ‘Consume Me’ EP (which was only released on vinyl) and which produced the single ‘Heart Hits The Ground’. The EP was produced by Pierre “Pitchie” Rommelaere, who replaced Crawford-Browne on guitar in the band’s line-up.
A nation-wide tour, and unreleased 2nd album followed, before the band temporarily disbanded and Donnelly went on to form Waxy O’Connor. Then in 2001, what began as a Greg Donnelly solo album project, soon turned into a Dolly Rockers reunion album with Pitchie Rommelaere on guitar (and producing) and Anthony Bull returning on bass.

🇿🇦 Here’s the first of my South Africa LPs from in Cape Town. It’s Delicious Monster by David Kramer from 1982. Kramer is a popular South African singer, songwriter and artist who’s known for his early opposition to apartheid. He rocketed into the public eye with a #1 hit “BLOKKIES JOUBERT” a portrait of a has-been Springbok rugby player. 🏉

🇿🇦 Friends of mine recently visited South Africa. While I wasn’t lucky enough to go, I am lucky enough to have been brought back some wonderful gifts from the legendary in Cape Town. 😇
Pictured are two different South African presses of Cold Fact by Rodriguez on CD, and a Mabu Vinyl sticker. I did get a few LPs, and I’ll be posting those over the next few days so stay tuned!

🌍 Just thought I’d post this as I watched “The Greatest Night in Pop” on Netflix last night. It was a fascinating film that documents the writing of “We Are The World” and the process of gathering America’s top talent at the time to record it in one night, at one location. Amazing! 🙌
These days, artists would just share digital files and add their own parts, wherever they are. The film was a nice throwback to the artists I grew up listening to and idolized, and the days of record sales.
While the song may be a bit dated, it sold 20 million copies, raising $63 million to fight famine in Africa. A great cause. And I love Bob Geldof - the man who started it all with “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid. A Canadian single followed as well: “Tears Are Not Enough” by Northern Lights. 🤩
Check out the documentary on Netflix - highly recommended!

⏰ This post isn’t exactly timely but then again it seems I’m always late to the party. The 7” single for “Now And Then” by The Beatles! All the way from Scotland courtesy of my bestie Eddie, although the sticker on the back says made in Germany. The question is: do I open it and play it, or keep it sealed?? 🤔

🇨🇦 Today is Gordon Lightfoot’s birthday. He would’ve turned 85. This summer, a friend travelling around Canada passed through Gord’s hometown of Orillia, ON, and visited a couple of monuments to his life and accomplishments. Thanks Gord, for your contributions to the world of music. RIP. 🍁

🤩 I’ve been a Ron Sexsmith fan for ages - dating back to earlier releases Blue Boy (2001), Cobblestone Runway (2002), and even Grand Opera Lane (1991). I picked up this copy of 2013’s Forever Endeavour ages ago then forgot all about it. So here it is, for your listening pleasure as well as mine. Enjoy!

🤠 Richard Inman is the real deal.
I picked up this 2-record set when he passed through town recently with fellow Canadian country troubadour Zachary Lucky. They performed together at our sister business, Ship & Plough Tavern here in Gimli.
This double album is a collection of Richard’s early recordings, previously available only on compact disc: the self-titled album Richard Inman (2016) and the follow-up Hasta La Vista (2019).
Richard is as authentic as they come. You won’t find him on social media, but you can check out his music on Bandcamp and other streaming services. Do yourself a favour and search for his music today - your heart will be happy that you did ❤️
