🤩 New record from out now, picked up when they played on the weekend. Great new music, cool white vinyl, and the album title “We Were Born Here, What’s Your Excuse?” is a nod to the Simpsons episode when they went to Winnipeg (swipe 👉)

Benjamin Darvill, known by his stage name Son of Dave, is a Canadian musician and singer–songwriter. He was a member of Grammy award-nominated, Juno award-winning folk rock band Crash Test Dummies in which he played harmonica, mandolin, guitar and percussion before returning to his blues, Beat-Box and harmonica driven solo work in 2000. 🇿🇦 After few days away…the next instalment of my South Africa finds from this is the debut EP from The Dolly Rockers called Consume Me (1992). It’s signed by the band and came with a newspaper article tucked inside - always a nice find! 😯
The Dolly Rockers were formed in 1990 by Greg Donnelly (vocals) with Anthony Bull (bass), Stuart Crawford-Browne (guitar) and Arnold Vermaak (drums). It was this line-up that recorded the earlier ‘Consume Me’ EP (which was only released on vinyl) and which produced the single ‘Heart Hits The Ground’. The EP was produced by Pierre “Pitchie” Rommelaere, who replaced Crawford-Browne on guitar in the band’s line-up.
A nation-wide tour, and unreleased 2nd album followed, before the band temporarily disbanded and Donnelly went on to form Waxy O’Connor. Then in 2001, what began as a Greg Donnelly solo album project, soon turned into a Dolly Rockers reunion album with Pitchie Rommelaere on guitar (and producing) and Anthony Bull returning on bass.

🇿🇦 Here’s the first of my South Africa LPs from in Cape Town. It’s Delicious Monster by David Kramer from 1982. Kramer is a popular South African singer, songwriter and artist who’s known for his early opposition to apartheid. He rocketed into the public eye with a #1 hit “BLOKKIES JOUBERT” a portrait of a has-been Springbok rugby player. 🏉

🇿🇦 Friends of mine recently visited South Africa. While I wasn’t lucky enough to go, I am lucky enough to have been brought back some wonderful gifts from the legendary in Cape Town. 😇
Pictured are two different South African presses of Cold Fact by Rodriguez on CD, and a Mabu Vinyl sticker. I did get a few LPs, and I’ll be posting those over the next few days so stay tuned!

🌍 Just thought I’d post this as I watched “The Greatest Night in Pop” on Netflix last night. It was a fascinating film that documents the writing of “We Are The World” and the process of gathering America’s top talent at the time to record it in one night, at one location. Amazing! 🙌
These days, artists would just share digital files and add their own parts, wherever they are. The film was a nice throwback to the artists I grew up listening to and idolized, and the days of record sales.
While the song may be a bit dated, it sold 20 million copies, raising $63 million to fight famine in Africa. A great cause. And I love Bob Geldof - the man who started it all with “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid. A Canadian single followed as well: “Tears Are Not Enough” by Northern Lights. 🤩
Check out the documentary on Netflix - highly recommended!

⏰ This post isn’t exactly timely but then again it seems I’m always late to the party. The 7” single for “Now And Then” by The Beatles! All the way from Scotland courtesy of my bestie Eddie, although the sticker on the back says made in Germany. The question is: do I open it and play it, or keep it sealed?? 🤔

🤩 Picked up a few new records yesterday when from Edmonton played with from Winnipeg at in Gimli. It was a great show and nice to see in the crowd!
It’s great to collect those records by world-famous bands but don’t forget to support local and independent artists by attending their shows and picking up some merch! Some of my favourites albums are by independent artists! 🇨🇦

🎸 I only heard today (via Randy Bachman’s Twitter) that Chad Allan died on Nov. 21 at 80 years old. From Allan’s obituary in the Vancouver Sun:
In 2015, Chad was inducted as a Member of the Order of Manitoba for his contribution to Canadian music. Chad was the part of the fabric of the Canadian music history having been the founding member and original lead singer of the iconic band, the Guess Who.
Born in Winnipeg, Chad was born Allan Kowbel and took his stage name, Chad Allan, in tribute to a favourite 1950s singer, Chad Mitchell. His first band was Allan and the Silvertones and then Chad Allan and the Expressions, which evolved into the Guess Who.
Chad left the Guess Who in 1966 to attend college. In 1967, he hosted the weekly CBC TV music program, Let’s Go.
Songwriting put a fire in his belly and gave him energy for life. He played piano, guitar and accordion, and continued to perform until his stroke in 2017.
Much love to Allan for his musical contributions, and condolences to his family members and all those who knew and played with him. ❤️

🇨🇦 Today is Gordon Lightfoot’s birthday. He would’ve turned 85. This summer, a friend travelling around Canada passed through Gord’s hometown of Orillia, ON, and visited a couple of monuments to his life and accomplishments. Thanks Gord, for your contributions to the world of music. RIP. 🍁

🤩 I’ve been a Ron Sexsmith fan for ages - dating back to earlier releases Blue Boy (2001), Cobblestone Runway (2002), and even Grand Opera Lane (1991). I picked up this copy of 2013’s Forever Endeavour ages ago then forgot all about it. So here it is, for your listening pleasure as well as mine. Enjoy!

🤠 Richard Inman is the real deal.
I picked up this 2-record set when he passed through town recently with fellow Canadian country troubadour Zachary Lucky. They performed together at our sister business, Ship & Plough Tavern here in Gimli.
This double album is a collection of Richard’s early recordings, previously available only on compact disc: the self-titled album Richard Inman (2016) and the follow-up Hasta La Vista (2019).
Richard is as authentic as they come. You won’t find him on social media, but you can check out his music on Bandcamp and other streaming services. Do yourself a favour and search for his music today - your heart will be happy that you did ❤️

This is a significant step up for me. Let me know what think, or if you have any feedback/suggestions/advice! And check out my new reel to hear it in action 👂

🇺🇸 This post is in honour of who after MANY years has announced a Winnipeg date - Nov 10, 2023 - as part of a Canadian extension of his current tour. The show marks Springsteen’s FIRST EVER tour stop in Winnipeg.
In addition to Winnipeg, Springsteen and the E Street Band will also perform in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Montreal, along with two concerts in Toronto.

😢 RIP David Crosby. I’ve posted this album a long while back but I’ll post it again in his honour. David Crosby and Graham Nash, 1972 on Atlantic. It’s one of my favourite albums tbh - so peaceful and nostalgic. If you have it, give it a spin today. ✌️

🇮🇪 OK…so this will be the last post in my series of finds from my recent trip to the UK…but what a great find it is!
This is Irish folk rock band Hothouse Flowers, their second album Home released in 1990…
I lived in the UK for a few years in the 1990s and Hothouse Flowers really grew on me (no pun intended). So when I came across this record I just had to have it! 🤩
My followers in Canada and the US may not be familiar, but this band topped the charts in Ireland, the UK, and parts of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
Home was not as successful as their debut album of 1988, called People, but is considered to be among the band’s best work.

Both released in 2019.

🎙 Friends of mine recently went to a concert in and brought me back this signed record!
James played Oct. 4 at the historic Burton Cummings Theatre () on his Open Road tour. Open Road is the name of this, his latest album, released in 2021.
James got his break opening for Stevie Ray Vaughan in in 1984 when the scheduled opening act didn’t show. Vaughan then invited James to perform with him during the encore, and then join his tour as a permanent opening act. 🤩

👏 Excited to check out this debut record, called About Times, by and .
Judging by what I’ve already heard and seen, the album will be a real banger.
You can check out Jameson Day on YouTube to see the official video for the album’s first single, “Just Feel” - it’s a gooder!
Congrats, James! Another incredibly talented Manitoban sharing their art with the world 🎶

🤩 Three new records today, vinyl re-releases of The Ghosts That Haunt Me (1991), A Worm’s Life (1996), and Give Yourself A Hand (1999). All signed by the four original members of the band: Brad, Dan, Ellen, and Mitch 🤩
The band is best known around the world for their 1993 single "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" and best known in Canada for the 1991 hit single "Superman's Song".
The origin of the Crash Test Dummies is tied to the history of two Winnipeg nightspots, the Spectrum Cabaret and the Blue Note Café - both of which I frequented back in the late 80s and early 90s.
Tonight’s show was a trip down memory lane. The band performed with at the Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg. Attended w/

🤓 I don’t have a lot of non-music records (or maybe I do 😂)…but these ones seemed pretty interesting…tales of survival and tragedy as told by those who were onboard the “unsinkable” ship.
What kind of non-music records are in your collection? Which ones are your favourites? 🤔
