the sun has a pole shift every 11 years (solar minimum and maximum) we can learn a lot from these events, Nasa has a probe studying the sun right now until 2025 at the solar maximum. right now we are at solar minimum. another possibility is a magnetic excurison where the poles change location but do not reverse. current geological records suggest we had such an excursion about 12000 years ago. that article suggest that it is the crust that moves however the data that scientist have collected is from volcanic rock that formed at the time of the pole shift, they compared the magnetic alignment of the rock with the current north pole location and noticed the differences. if we are indeed going through a pole shift.the main concern would be radiation coming though the atmosphere. we may have some increased volcanic activity and tectonic plate movement but the magnetic shield could potentially reduce to 10% of what it is now. zecharia sitchin wrote of an alien race that came here for gold to protect thier atmosphere.
