For the past two years, I kicked off September in the recording studio, having spent the summer researching, writing, and preparing interviews for forthcoming series.

But this summer was different.

I was contracted to write a chapter for Lonely Planet, covering Toronto, Niagara, and Southwestern Ontario, and it was pure joy. I am beyond grateful to have met amazing people and hear stories from:

- a chef who started working in kitchens in his grandmother's catering business in India and now at the helm of a Michelin-list restaurant

- a woman with solid plans and foundation to launch the country's first Indigenous department store and reclaim the Indigenous economy

- a Toronto-based muralist at work on his latest piece, who shared the impact of his time in residential school

- a person with roots in both the Buxton and Dawn settlements who brought this chapter of local history to life for me (my Dad was born in Dawn Township)

- a priest who gave me a tour of a church that, to me, doubles as an art gallery

- community members with a passion for Victorian architecture

And, of course, to eat countless incredible meals highlighting the diversity of our province

And so much more.

So I don't have a third season to launch anytime soon. But the great news is that have a great podcast with new episodes every Monday. And is getting into the podcast action, too.

By Mandy Sinclair On Postcards from Huron County, we chat quite a bit about architecture, in particular buildings that are no longer. So when I heard about the book 305 Lost Buildings of Canada, I couldn’t wait to grab a copy. Would any buildings from our little slice of Ontario’s West Coast be ...

Oh hi! I realize it's been awhile since we popped up in your feed.

But I'm back in Ontario after seven glorious weeks spent working on the launch of a hotel collection, managing my Marrakech business and enjoying my life in Morocco; soaking up art, history, architecture and food and meeting new pals on a city break in Mexico City; and finally the Yves Saint Laurent Museum (I covered the opening of the Marrakech outpost in October 2017 and it remains one of my favourite assignments) and Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. It was definitely the winter I needed.

And since I returned about a month ago, I've been head down writing the stories I researched while in Morocco. You see, commissioned me to write the North Atlantic Coast chapter and two essays for its forthcoming Morocco guidebook. I submitted my content this week and am awaiting edits.

So obviously my head went to podcasting, one of my favourite channels for telling stories. I've been meeting with production studios, reading emails from listeners of my Why Morocco podcast and responding to requests to partner on a third season, and considering a third season of Postcards from Huron County. If the latter were to go ahead, I have a new angle I'd like to approach to telling the tales from our little corner of Ontario's West Coast.

Swipe for some of my favourite memories.

Then tell me what you've been up to lately in the comments.

With the holidays around the corner and the promise of longer days on the way, here at the Postcards from Huron County HQ, I'm preparing for peak cozy season. And it wouldn't be cozy season without stacks of vintage wool blankets made once upon a time in Benmiller (from where my Mom hails), perfectly scented candles from Olive and Rose Florist, and a good book or podcast for whiling away the hours.

In our latest blog post, we're sharing some of our favourite reads to accompany recent Postcards from Huron County episodes. Read at:

In season two, Marc Cantin shared details of his great-grandfather Narcisse Cantin's plan for a canal system that would have connected Lake Huron to Lake Erie. The red markings on this image depict what it would have looked like if it were realized. But in the episode Marc talks about his great-grandfather's struggles in bringing this vision to life.

In season one, Sinead Cox, a descendent of a British Home Child in Huron County, shared her family's history and the general history of Home Children in Canada.

One of my favourite historical fiction writers, Genevieve Graham, Author wrote a real page-turner called The Forgotten Home Child on the topic.

I couldn't put it down.

While fiction, she touches on true emotions that these children surely felt while navigating their way through their new homelands.

Over coffee with a friend recently, she mentioned that she's still blown away by the home children topic and Sinead Cox's family history shared in season one. In fact, it's something we hear often about this epiode.

One of my favourite historical fiction writers, writes on this topic in her book The Forgotten Home Child and shares tales of childhood separation, child labour and more. While a page-turner, there were moments of feeling deep sadness.

While season two may be underway, we're looking back at season one and have some recommended reads to accompany past episodes.

In season one, David Yates spoke about the prohibition era in Huron County, one of the last counties to abolish the law in 1959. (If you've not yet listened, find it on your favourite podcast app.

One of my favourite historical fiction writers, Genevieve Graham, Author's latest release Bluebell tells the story of returning to the Windsor area post war and the booming alcohol trade in this border town. There's reference to the temperance movement, the violence and wealth accumulated, and of course a tragedy.

In episode one of season two, Marc Cantin spoke about the development of St Joseph, including the Balmoral Hotel that previously stood on the corner of Highway 21 and County Road 84.

David Yates in the episode about the history of tourism in Huron County also spoke about this hotel and the guests who came to stay. While the hotel was torn down and the bricks sold decades ago, the St Joseph Historical society has kindly provided permission to share this sketch of the immense hotel that once welcomed travellers in Huron County.
