Last Wednesday was the last class of the Leadership Development course for the Advanced Business Program at .

This was a lively, energetic, and engaged group of students! They engaged in (sometimes) passionate discussions, but some were humourous too because I can’t remember the last time I laughed so much during class!

We did a lot of group work, one-on-one discussions, and role-play, which encouraged students to share their thoughts about the 5 practices of Exemplary Leadership (Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart), share their leadership experiences, and practice responding to different situations.

Throughout it all, I encouraged the students to talk as much as possible and allowed them to “pass” if they didn’t want to share. One student, who had passed on opportunities to share, opened up on the last class and shared her leadership story. That was a special moment for all of us.

Speaking of the last class, I asked students if they wanted to share their thoughts about the course. One student said they had many instructors and lecturers but I was “different”. I took that as a compliment! 😊

I enjoyed teaching this class and know they are ready for the next leadership course!

Last Tuesday, I invited to speak to my PR Fundamentals class.

A successful social media manager, digital creator, podcast host, and owner of Tayler shared that she was once a student, working two jobs, with student loans, and was broke, which my students could relate to.

She then shared how investing in herself through training, believing in her abilities, and taking a leap of faith in following her passion has produced results beyond her wildest dreams.

In closing, Tayler shared some valuable tips for success with students who may be interested in a career as a social media manager or perhaps one day have their own agency.

Thank you Tayler for sharing your knowledge and experience with my class. 💚

As an alumnus (Communications Certificate 2000), I appreciate that PACE celebrates and honours alumni.

As an instructor, it was lovely to interact with my students from over the years and hear how well everyone is doing.

I was so touched when students shared how much they enjoyed my classes and how I made such an impact on them. One student said he couldn’t believe I remembered his name!

I truly believe I’ve found my calling and my purpose. I’m grateful for the opportunity to care, to connect, to educate, and to make a difference in the lives of my students.

My heart is full. 💚

Dreams do come true!

I recently had the pleasure of volunteering at the Dream Maker Auction.

I was part of the Dream Cafe, that featured hand painted mugs created by the dream kids. In addition, , another sponsor of the Dream Cafe, were on site, offering espresso beverages. As well, they created a “Brushstroke Blend” bag of coffee beans specifically for this event.

For a minimal donation of $100, you received a mug of your choice, a card with the Dream kid’s name (with info about their “dream”), and a bag of coffee beans. Plus, the Kinsmen matched every dollar up to $10,000! And every donation received a tax receipt for 100% of the total.

I had a chance to look at all the mugs before the guests arrived and the creativity was amazing! I spied a big mug covered with green fir trees, painted by Kingston. I couldn’t resist so I happily made a donation!

It’s my new favourite mug!

Happy Earth Day! 🌍

As we consider ways to reuse, reduce and recycle, let’s consider how that applies to coffee!

♻️ Bring your reusable cup to your coffee shop. Not only will you reduce the amount of paper and plastic but you might get a discount too!

♻️ Buy your beans from a local roaster. Not only are you getting freshly roasted beans but you are supporting local and you can learn more about where the beans come from and how they are produced.

♻️ Reuse your coffee grounds. Instead of throwing them in the garbage, you can compost them, clean with them, exfoliate with them, and use them in your garden.

Please consider how you can lessen your impact today and every day. We need to save the earth because it’s the only planet with coffee!

Today is World Cancer Day!

Various coffee shops in Winnipeg and Manitoba are partnering with to raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection programs they offer.

I’m at on Provencher enjoying a cup of their Cafe Dante, which one of my favs! They are once again participating in “A Cup for Tomorrow” and are donating $1.00 from every cup served at their two locations between Feb 3-5!

I’ve lost family members and friends to this disease so even though I’ll always enjoy a cup of Cafe Dante, I’m especially glad I can do that today.

I encourage you to visit one of the coffee shops listed in my previous post, and buy a cup of your fav beverage! Every cup counts!

Christmas Eve has always been a special time for me, even more so than Christmas Day.

It’s gathering with family, eating the many dishes of food that are specifically prepared for this meal, and sharing our thoughts for the new year.

I end the evening by watching one of my favourite Christmas movies, “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

Speaking of movies, my 80th episode will be available to download tomorrow morning. It’s my top ten Christmas movies, top ten Christmas CDs and top ten Christmas songs.

I wish you and your family a merry and joyful Christmas 💚

Happy International Coffee Day!

Coffee with a friend is like capturing joy in a cup. I chose those words for the intro to my Coffee with Genny B podcast because it’s how I feel.

And even though we acknowledge and celebrate two special coffee days each year, for me, it’s a special coffee day every day. Especially when you spend it with a friend at a local coffee shop, enjoying each other’s company, and the delicious coffee of course!

In this photo, I’m having coffee with my friend at on a beautiful sunny fall day.

I encourage you to call up a friend and meet them for coffee at a local coffee shop. We can all use a little joy in our lives. 💚

As my friend .ca says, we are our own walking brand billboard. What we wear tells people what we’re about.

It’s finding a style that gives you confidence and joy. It’s finding clothes that make you feel beautiful and comfortable.

That’s how I felt in this green Brenda Swing Shirt, part of the fall collection by , that I had the honour of modelling at his grand opening last week!

And THIS Brenda is going to be my next BFF! 💚

Think about your favourite outfit and ask yourself these questions:

💚 Does this garment make me feel confident?

💚 Do I feel joy when I wear this out?

💚 Can I wear this for years to come and will it last?

💚 Am I comfortable in it?

If you answered “no” to any of these questions, I recommend you pay a visit to Lennard’s design studio at 290 McDermot (5th floor). You’re welcome! 💚

Going on a retreat can mean a weekend at the spa to rest and relax. And a retreat can be a sense of withdrawing into yourself; the act of giving up and taking time to regroup in a quiet and secluded space in order to come back stronger.

In episode 66, I spoke about a recent retreat at in Whitemouth, Manitoba. It was a very busy summer and I needed to get away; to withdraw and get some clarity. And that’s exactly what I’ve experienced during my stay.

Owners Jenny and Michel Dupas created a soul-nurturing place where you “disconnect” from the busy world and “connect” with yourself and Mother Earth. It was so peaceful and serene. Enjoying a cup of coffee outside in the morning and watching the sunrise was a highlight for me.

While I was there, I did some exploring and visited Joe from .alifarms located just past Seddons Corner, who roasts Barnwood coffee, and Andrew at in Elma. Of course, I bought coffee to take home!

I also visited .resort and met owners Megan and Rene. What a beautiful location!

And of course I stopped in to see Shannon at the restaurant in Whitemouth a few times. The food is delicious and the pies are amazing!

It was 24 hours of rest and relaxation, finding that clarity and focus that I needed.

I encourage you to consider a retreat for yourself!

As an instructor with , I’m grateful for guest speakers who share their knowledge and expertise with my students.

I recently taught an Event Management course, and I was fortunate to have not one, not two but three guest speakers…well actually four because I had two speakers in one of my classes!

In the “planning the event” class, I invited Jenna and Jenn from to share their story and their experience with planning events from start to finish.

In the “logistics and contingency plans” class, I invited to share her experience in organizing a hybrid event for the event, advice on contingency planning and lessons learned.

Finally, in the “sponsorship and gift in kind” class, I invited to talk about the importance of relationship building as it applies to sponsorship and GIK. She invited the students to participate in a “give and get” exercise.

Inviting industry leaders and those with experience in the field helps provide real world examples for the students, and helps to augment their education.

I started back to teaching in person for the first week in May, just over two years since my last live class.

Teaching on Zoom was relatively painless. Throw on some clothes, grab a coffee and head downstairs to my office.

But teaching in person has inspired me to dress up, to wear jewelry, and to take extra care with my makeup. I feel comfortable and confident - ready to take on the day.

I wore the Shai Shawl in teal from yesterday (with teal accessories of course)! The soft linen helped keep me feeling comfortable, and I received lots of compliments from my students!

Do you have a sweet tooth and crave all the delicious treats? Do you love to buy beautifully decorated cakes for special occasions? And do you prefer to support local bakeries?

In episode 47, I spoke with Bronwynn Hayles, owner of about how she started her baking business.

Bronwynn shared that she started working for Baked Expectations when she was 16 years old. That sparked an interest in baking for her. Fast forward a few years and Bronwyyn was working for the Fairmont Hotel making cakes. That inspired in her the idea of a "5 star experience" or "wow" factor.

Bronwynn started making cakes for friends, who raved about them and kept telling her that she should start her own business. It took the push from a friend that convinced Bronwynn that she should take that leap of faith.

It's been two years since Bronwynn first considered opening a business, and almost a year since she made it official.

Please listen to the episode and if you want to order any baking, please message Bronwynn!

Did you know that the most beautiful thing you wear is your smile?

Your beautiful smile allows the happiness you are feeling to shine from within and brighten your entire face. It has the power to change your mood and the moods of others. We are naturally drawn to people who smile. And not only can smiling make you more attractive but it can also make you look more youthful!

Smiling can be seen as an involuntary response to people, things, or situations that bring you joy. For instance, I smile when I'm preparing my coffee in anticipation of how delicious it will taste.

Smiling can also be a conscious, intentional choice. For instance, I smile at my participants when teaching Zumba because it brings me joy and also, it encourages them to feel the joy as well. And because smiles are contagious, they smile right back at me!

Your smile can affect your body and mind in a number of different ways, offering benefits for your health, your mood, and even the moods of people around you. For instance, a smile can trigger the release of three hormones that make you feel good when you smile. They include dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin. These signal to your body that you’re happy, and in turn, you feel happier. Think of smiling as a natural antidepressant.

I leave you with one more reason to smile. British researchers found that one smile can provide the same level of brain stimulation as up to 2,000 chocolate bars! So save those calories and smile instead!

What makes you smile? Please share in the comments!

🎶 “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, the medicine go down-wown, the medicine go down. Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down in a most delightful way.” 🎶

This is the chorus from the song, “A Spoonful of Sugar” from the movie “Mary Poppins”.

Happy Wellness Wednesday!

It’s important that you fill your cup and make time for self-care. But just like a spoonful of sugar, you need something sweet and something positive on occasion to add to your cup to brighten your day.

🥄 One tablespoon of joy
🥄 One tablespoon of peace
🥄 One tablespoon of gratitude
🥄 One tablespoon of kindness
🥄 One tablespoon of growth
🥄 One tablespoon of strength

Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the most difference.

Which tablespoon (or more) will you add to your cup today?

Happy Earth Day! 🌍

As we consider ways to reuse, reduce and recycle to lessen our impact on the earth, let’s also consider how that applies to coffee!

Here are a few simple ways you can easily incorporate into your daily life:

♻️ Bring your reusable cup to your coffee shop. Not only will you reduce the amount of paper and plastic in the landfill but you might get a discount too!
♻️ Buy local. It’s more convenient to pick up a tin or bag at the store. But when you buy from a local roaster, you are getting freshly roasted beans, you are supporting local, and you can have a conversation about where the beans come from and how they are produced.
♻️ Reuse your coffee grounds. Instead of throwing them away, you can compost them, clean with them, exfoliate with them (lots of methods found online), and use them as a deodorizer in your fridge (use cool grounds in a bowl and replace every few weeks).

Please consider how you can lessen your impact today and every day. We need to save our earth because it’s the only planet with coffee!

20/04/2022

It’s human nature to want to be liked and accepted by other people.

And I’m sure we’ve all tried to change something about ourselves just to fit in or to make someone like us.

I know I’ve done that many times in my life, wanting to please everyone so much that I was forcing myself to be someone that I wasn’t. That can take a toll on your psyche and your self confidence.

The reality is that, despite our best efforts, there will always be people who don’t like us.

But you want to know something? You’re not everyone’s cup of tea and they’re not yours, and it’s okay.

Instead, be someone’s cup of strong coffee because coffee is awesome!

Do you know what self-reclamation, conscious parenting, and living a life with soul are?

In episode 45, I spoke with , a self-reclamation expert, a certified life coach and mentor, and the owner of "Life with Soul", a personal development company.

According to Melissa, self-reclamation is a journey back to yourself. When you are taking care of yourself first, you can take better care of the ones you love the most. It's also having a growth mindset. It's getting outside your comfort zone and pushing yourself to grow.

Melissa also spoke about conscious parenting. A mother of two, she said it's your own self-awareness and your realization that you might be projecting onto your child. It's also your compassion that's required to parent consciously.

And, as Melissa states on her website, "to live a Life With Soul means we must honour how we want to feel on this big, beautiful journey and be unapologetic about crafting a life that accentuates those feelings and desires."

To learn more about these topics, please listen to the episode. Click on the link to my website and click on the "podcast" tab.

And contact Melissa at melissagiller.com to learn how you can live a life with soul!
