⚠️ The RNC is warning the public of the presence of carfentanil and methylfentanyl.

Health Canada has confirmed this is the first time both drugs have been detected in NL. Carfentanil and methylfentanyl were found to be present in drugs that were seized by the Weapons and Drug Enforcement Unit on the Northeast Avalon.

Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid normally used as a sedative for large animals and may be 100 times more toxic than fentanyl. Carfentanil looks similar to table salt, and ingesting just one or two grains can be fatal to humans.

Methylfentanyl is one of the most potent opioids, estimated to be between 400-6000 times stronger than morphine.

It is believed both drugs were being sold as fentanyl.

If you or someone you know is using illicit drugs, please ensure there is a naloxone kit close by. Free naloxone kits are available at the following distribution sites - gov.nl.ca/hcs/naloxonekits.

If you or someone you know is experiencing the symptoms of a drug overdose call 911 immediately.

A heads up that a waterspout watch was issued earlier (still in effect) for the Northumberland Strait, Cabot Strait, and Gulf - Magdalen marine districts.

Conditions are favourable for the development of waterspouts today with wind gusts of 40 knots or higher.

While often considered rare or uncommon, waterspouts are not unheard of in the waters off our coastlines, especially in the later summer to early fall seasons. Also note this map shows the border of the alert over some land areas but this alert is just in effect for the marine zones, not land locations.

A police dog named Phox, stationed in Labrador, has proven his worth by responding to an impressive 27 calls for service in September alone. Partnered with Constable Daniel Rouleau, Phox played a crucial role in various incidents, including a series of break-and-enters that led to charges against one man and the apprehension of three individuals on charges related to vehicle theft, assault, and property damage. Notably, one of those arrested was wanted on outstanding domestic violence charges.

Phox also assisted in a more sensitive situation, helping to locate a person experiencing a mental health crisis who had fled into a wooded area. Thanks to the quick actions of Phox and Constable Rouleau, the individual was found and transported to the hospital for necessary medical attention. Phox's contributions highlight the vital role of police dogs in community safety and crisis response.
