Incorporating video into your content strategy does not have to take hours or be incredibly stressful!

A lot of stress that comes from video content is a result of people trying to be fancy, and the time spent on editing. Avoid all of that, and start by simply taking small videos during classes and events, and posting those as standalone videos! Once you are comfortable with that, you can venture into editing or using the "Template" feature available on Instagram!

A friendly reminder that you success is not possible if you haven't set any goals to achieve - and that applies to social media too!

One of the first things that you should do is set goals for your accounts. When setting your goals, there are some questions that you want to ask yourself: What does social media do for my business? What role does it play? What can be realistically achieved with the resources (time, money or human) that I have? What can I commit to consistently?

From there, you can set goals that you want to achieve! This can be posting goals, consistency goals, growth goals, sales goals, etc.! No matter what goals you set though, make sure they are S.M.A.R.T. goals. SMART meaning Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

Ask your audience, and REALLY listen to them.

HOW TO ASK YOUR AUDIENCE
On social media, you have access to your audience right at your fingertips! Here are some ways you can ask your audience:
✨ Use engagement tools on your stories (polls, questions, etc.)
✨ Use call-to-actions in your posts that encourage them to share their thoughts, opinions and/or feedback

WHY YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR AUDIENCE
Their opinion is invaluable because they will tell you EXACTLY what they are looking for from you! From what content they like to what products/services they want to see more of, your audience is able to provide you with immediate feedback that you can use when making future decisions!

WHAT TO DO WITH THE INFORMATION
Use the feedback/answers they provide you to inform decisions about your content, marketing, and business!

2023 is the year of being your true/authentic/real self in everything that you do!

Gone are the times of people aspiring to be like what they see online – rather they want to see how you are just like them. The unedited and unapologetic YOU!

Social media has forever been (and probably will continue you to be in some ways) a highlight reel for everybody. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Show up and share your story, behind the scenes content, the reality of your life, the ups and the downs, the messiness (because let’s face it, life IS messy), how you got to where you are, and the list goes on and on.

No one is perfect, so what you share shouldn’t be either! Your audience will connect with the real you – I promise. The real you WILL result in a loyal community being built around you. Cause remember, people follow PEOPLE, not brands.

Using images/videos of real people connected to your brand is SO important, and here's why:

✨ You will stand out! Don't blend in by using (only) stock photos/videos - stand out by incorporating photos and videos of the people, places and things connected to your brand. Two options: You can take these yourself or schedule a brand photoshoot!
✨ You will represent your brand/business more authentically this way! Social media should be an online representation of your brand, and using photos/videos of the people, places and things connected to it is a way more authentic representation than using stock photos/videos
✨ Your audience will connect better with you, your brand and your content!

Don't have an email list yet? Here are some reasons why you should:

✨ They offer a way to connect with your audience when your other platforms are not accessible
✨ They offer a way to give your subscribers discounts and first access to sales - people love this!
✨ They offer a way to connect with your audience if they aren't on social media, because not everyone is!
✨ They are an additional platform for you to promote your services/products on
✨ They are an additional platform for you to use to nurture your audience, and get them to know, like and trust you

From never posting on LinkedIn to posting three times a week in January - here's how it went!

When I set my goals for 2023, I decided that i wanted to have more of a presence on LinkedIn to open myself up for more opportunities - and in an effort to do that, I signed up for the Pretty Little Marketer (PLM) LinkedIn Challenge. Long story short, Sophie Miller of PLM gives you 3 prompts a week for the entirety of January, and you are responsible for answering and posting your responses on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

So here are my real, honest takeaways from the last month
✨ Posting on LinkedIn can feel scary because it's a "professional" environment, but putting myself out there has taken away a bit of that scary feeling
✨ I have valuable things to share at every part of my journey - just cause I am young, doesn't mean my knowledge and experiences won't be valued
✨ Showing up three times a week on LinkedIn is doable for me
✨ I didn't batch create my LinkedIn content for January and I won't be for the near future - I feel like it's more authentic to really show up and talk about what you want to talk about on the day of then planning it out too much in advance
✨ I am excited to show up more on LinkedIn this year and see where that posting takes me!

P.S. Sophie Miller is a genius for so many reasons (one of them being this challenge) so if you don't follow her, you really should!

You are not alone - trust me!

After creating content for multiple clients, I'll be honest that my creative brain just isn't always in it to create the content that I need to for my own channels. BUT sharing valuable and educational content on my social accounts is part of my job so I still need to show up!!

Whether you create social content for tons of other clients and yourself, or you are a business owner simply finding it hard to create the content after running the rest of your business, here are some things that you can try to get those creative juices flowing (all based on things that I have tried and seem to work):
✨ Take a step away from your computer and reset! Go for a walk, workout, read, eat, watch TV - do anything! Just step away from the computer and your content, it'll be there when you come back
✨ Jot down/save content ideas, trends, and/or audios as you find them so that you have a bank of content to pull from!
✨ Block out a specific day to work on the content for your accounts! I would suggest that you don't do other content creation or creative things on this day so that all of your creative brain can be dedicated to the content you are creating!
✨ If you are someone who likes to create content on the go (i.e., not batch creating), simply make sure you have something handy to write down your content ideas as they come to you!
✨ If none of this works and you have the flexibility to do so, come back to creating the content another day! Sometimes our creative juices are just tapped out for that day and there is no getting them back
✨ If it's in your budget, outsource your social media to an agency, business or individual!

Sometimes focusing on the feeling/problem that your service will solve is better than stating the features of your service.

It is really easy to list off the features of a product or service, but I can guarantee that many of your clients will struggle to find the value of your product or service simply from hearing about its features. What will resonate with them is when you talk about a problem or feeling they are experiencing, and how your product or service addresses/solves that problem or feeling for them. THAT is how you show real value!

An example for you... instead of saying: My full social media management package provides you with daily engagement, x number of posts, and trend research, try saying: Feeling exhausted, burnt out and stressed by the task of staying on top of trends and posting to your socials? Then my full social media management package is perfect for you!

Obviously you want your clients to know the features of any product or service that you are offering, but them knowing that you can solve a problem they are having should be at the forefront of your marketing efforts!

I've said it before, and I will say it again, repurposing your content onto different platforms is such an effective way to work smarter!

Let's look at repurposing your blog content for other platforms like social media and email marketing!

SOCIAL MEDIA
There are two different approaches that I would recommend when repurposing your blog content for social:
1️⃣ Share a short preview/summary and direct your audience to your blog to read the whole thing
2️⃣ Take the content from your blog post and format it for social media! With this option, you wouldn't be redirecting your audience to your blog to read the rest of the content, so make sure you are sharing enough information with your audience and don't leave them confused or seeking more details!

EMAIL
There are two different approaches that I would recommend when repurposing your blog content for social:
1️⃣ Share a short preview/summary as a section of your email and direct your audience to your blog to read the whole thing
2️⃣ Share the full blog post as it's own email to your email list (no external link needed)

You've already spent time creating the blog post and the information in your blog post is valuable! Share that value in as many places as you can!

You're probably not grabbing their attention within that first sentence, otherwise known as the hook!

Why is your hook so important?

WELL - the hook, otherwise known as the first sentence of your caption or your email subject line, is the first thing that your audience is going to read and the only thing that is going to encourage them to keep reading! If it doesn't grasp their attention in some way (asking a question, identifying a problem for your audience, identifying a feeling your audience is experiencing, something funny, etc.) then your audience will scroll on or delete your email - both of which are not good! You want your audience to be interacting with your content in some way - reading, liking, commenting, sharing, saving, etc. You don't want them to simply scroll away!

Even if your content is incredibly valuable beyond that first line, it won't matter if they don't read it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wishing you all the best this holiday season! I hope you get to enjoy some fun, good food, and moments of relaxation with your loved ones!

P.S. I am not currently enjoying the beautiful sun that is shining in this photo haha this photo is from 2019 when I spent six months on an internship working for Walt Disney World where it was very sunny and warm despite it being the end of November

Full transparency, I have been busy with client work, Christmas parties, and visiting with friends and family that I haven't had time to snap an updated holiday photo so 2019 Florida Mikayla it is 🤷🏻‍♀️

There are so many amazing things that happened this year, and I am proud of each and every one of them!

Some of this year's wins that I am proud of:
✨ Graduating from the University of Waterloo with a Master of Digital Experience Innovation
✨ Completing my first full website design and development project
✨ Having my biggest earning month since starting my business
✨ Having the courage to make investments in my business (education, software, etc.) even early in my journey
✨ Finding time to travel (near and far) while running my business
✨ Running my first marketing photoshoot for a client

I cannot wait to see the amazing things I accomplish in 2023! Here's to celebrating our accomplishments - big or small!

I cannot stress this enough... developing and maintaining a consistent brand in all aspects of your business is SO important!

From your online presence to your print or in-person presence (if you have one), all of your materials, content, graphics, and employees should be communicating the same thing about your brand in similar ways. What do I mean by this?

Well.... I say similar ways because your content can't be identical in all of these different formats and having your employees scripted is draining and inauthentic. BUT everything you do can, and should, have the same driving forces in regard to visuals, language, and brand story.

4 things you can do to develop and maintain a consistent brand your brand across different formats:
~ Pick brand fonts and colours and stick to them, in everything that you do (yes, i know that Canva or Adobe font is SO pretty but if isn't what you have already selected and truly doesn't represent your brand - don't create anything with it)
~ Define your tone profile and your tone characteristics (funny or serious? casual or formal? irreverent or respectful? enthusiastic or matter-of-fact?)
~ As soon as you can, have a brand photoshoot done. Stock images are great for businesses that are just starting out (I still use them), but photos specific to your brand are so important. Find inspiration for your graphics/images/videos - this doesn't mean copy other people, simply BE INSPIRED and then go out there and carve your own path in this world
~ You and anyone who speaks on behalf of your business should know your story and communicate it effectively (stories sell... tell them honestly, beautifully and unapologetically)

Are you struggling to keep your content focused month-over-month? Are you struggling to come up with new, inspired and/or educational content every month? It might be time to revisit your brand's content pillars!

Here's a quick reference guide for content pillar basics:

WHAT ARE CONTENT PILLARS?
Also known as content categories or content buckets, these are the topics that your brand's content will be centred around. Whether you are sharing your own content about the topics or amplifying someone else's, everything should be focused on the topics you have chosen.

HOW MANY SHOULD I HAVE?
Ideally, you should have 3-5 content pillars!

WHY SHOULD I DEFINE CONTENT PILLARS?
Defining your content pillars ensures that your content has a very focused purpose & direction, and it makes it easier for you to create content every month!

BONUS TIP
I have always found that picking topics that are both relevant/crucial to your business, as well as things that you love to talk about, are passionate about, and/or an advocate of makes your content that much more impactful at the end of the day!

For instance, you'll notice that one of the things I talk about often is work-life balance as a business owner. That is because it is the basis of how I run my business, something I value, and something I advocate for!
