When I grew up in St. Boniface in the 60s and 70s francophones would quickly switch to English in my company, not out of respect, but fear that French was not welcome. These were the years of rights advocate George Forest and the firebombing of the Société de la francophonie manitobaine offices. Today I’m grateful that people like dedicated SFM Executive Director Daniel Boucher have made it possible for even members of my family to spend years in French education and now be considered a francophonie. The diversity that is now St. Boniface is because people like M. Boucher had the wisdom to look far into the future and see what was needed. Merci M. Boucher! Enjoy your retirement.

We know it takes a whole village to raise a festival. So this one belongs to the hundreds of volunteers over the seven years who have built Holiday Alley in Selkirk's historic downtown. BRAVO to all the volunteers. (holidayalley.ca)

Tip 10: Step up to be a cheerleader
Every award-winning project needs a cheerleader. Maybe it’s our long dark cold winters, but Manitoba has a lot of champions. It’s how we got The LEAF . Thanks Margaret Redmond! It’s how we got the first national museum outside of Ottawa. Thanks Gail Asper . It’s how we got Qaumajuq. Thanks . It’s how the World Trade Centre came to Winnipeg, thanks to Mariette Mulaire. And of course Mark Chipman and the . All Manitobans. All raised in winters! Coincidence?

Tip 1: What’s the goal?
When building a community festival know your goals. And if the plan doesn’t work, change the plan but never the goals.
For example when a pandemic interrupted the 4th live festival, Holiday Alley still supported musicians, artists and artisans and went from a 2-day live festival to 12-days of virtual activities. It launched with 2-hours of Holiday Alley TV with performers coming from their homes and a few messages from the Santa kids did not get to see over the pandemic. Holiday Alley even engaged other cities named Selkirk around the world to create a joint sing-a-long with submissions from Selkirk, Scotland; Selkirk, New York State and Selkirk, Ontario. The song? The 12 Days of Holiday Alley, of course.

The talent in Winnipeg never ceases to amaze me. The PRHouse team toured The LEAF this week, a project almost everyone of us touched in some way over the years - from branding to campaign strategies to logo development to event planning to video production. It was a joy to work on and even more fun to breath in. How lucky are we. #

Winnipeg has a new place to stretch, breath and connect – the outdoor Gardens at The Leaf at Assiniboine Park.

Take a stroll through these 30 acres and be reminded that nature and plants is what binds us across generations and cultures – and beyond COVID.

Meet the people who envisioned The Leaf: Canada’s Diversity Gardens 12 years ago and what they have planned next.

We have spent a lot of time down there as The PRHouse team created this virtual tour and it’s our new “go to” place. Another ambitious world-class Winnipeg attraction! The people in this city are amazing!

Shout out to HTFC Planning & Design who were on the "ground" floor on this project.

This Canada Day, we honour the Elders of Poplar River First Nation, Manitoba for their early and unwavering commitment to helping us learn and heal from Indian Residential Schools.

For the first time this year, Poplar River has released the documentary A Gift from Our Elders for the public to see, produced 10 years ago, as a community record.

The PRHouse was honoured back then and are still humbled today to have been asked to sit with, listen to, record and deliver the Elders’ accounts for this 30-minute documentary.

We learned a lot those days in November 2012 in Poplar River and were surprised by the conversations that stretched from hurt to hope, struggle to forgiveness, anger to peace.

There are troubling accounts in this documentary, regardless enter with an open mind and strong heart – this Canada Day.

Funded by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

A PR person walks into a florist. (No this is not the beginning of joke.)
While ordering flowers for a client she asks, “How’s businesses?”
Pretty soon the florist and the PR person turn the answer into a wide-spread media story about a worldwide shortage of flowers and international supply chain problems in a pandemic that threaten Mother's Day.

A good PR person can walk into any business and quickly find a fascinating story that mainstream media would love to know and would help raise the client's profile.

Five tips for finding a good news story in your business.
1. Listen carefully to what your staff are most proud of and chat about.
2. Ask staff who are working at the grass roots “how’s business, what are our clients telling you?”
3. Expand the story by partnering with another group or agency, as the Norwood Florist Design Studio partnered with the WTC Winnipeg for this story.
4. Look for a timely hook, like Mother’s Day.
5. Contact the media and if you’ve done #1 to #4 then there’s a good chance it will get picked up as it did for the WTC Winnipeg and the Norwood Florist Design Studio.

The best news is “news you can use.” The World Trade Centre Winnipeg showed us how when it took a lot of complicated advice on climate change and issued Eight Tips for Earth Day for Canadian businesses.
When you’re looking to share “news your clients can use” try to….
1. Take complicated ideas and break it into a few tips. Keep it practical.
2. Use plain language and short words.
3. Make some of the tips quick to implement or what we call “easy wins.”
4. Hook your tips to an event – like Earth Day.
5. Send it to the media and if you’ve done #1 to #4 then there’s a good chance it will get picked up as it did for the WTC Winnipeg.

It takes a lot of smart decisions over years to create the spectacular WAG-QAUMAJUQ in Winnipeg, Canada. Among them were:

1. Courage and commitment from the WAG to share power as part of its Truth and Reconciliation promise - hiring, appointing and taking direction from Canada’s Indigenous community. If any institution in Canada is struggling with how, and how fast to embrace the TRC recommendations, it need only look to WAG-QAUMAJUQ.

2. Women make up the majority of the WAG-QAUMAJUQ bench strength – from Elders to curators to fundraisers to artists to volunteers.

3. Recognizing that while the building is spectacular, the future is knowing that art is a voice and that each piece of art is a rich story waiting to teach us.

Or as one of the citizens in this video says, about seeing Inuit art for the first time, “I want to see more of this. It’s going to make my life more happy.”
