2021- A recap by Voice For Justice


2021 has been both a memorable and forgettable year. The year saw normal situation is returning in different countries gradually despite spread of Omicron variant of coronavirus.

As we look ahead to 2022, the experiences of this past year give me hope for better times and new opportunities.

People across the world bade farewell to 2021 and welcomed 2022 with fresh hopes for a better life.

Here is a list — and timeline — of the major events that have happened in 2021.

On January 1, African countries began officially trading under a new continent-wide free trade area.

On January 6, supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump attack the United States Capitol. Five people died during the riot.

On January 10, Kim Jong-un was elected as the General Secretary of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea.

On January 20, Joe Biden was elected as the 46th President of the United States.

On January 22, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons came into effect.

On February 1, a coup d'état in Myanmar removed Aung San Suu Kyi from power.
Kosovo officially established diplomatic ties with Israel on this day.

On 4, President Joe Biden announced that the United States will cease providing weapons to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

From February 13 to 17, a major winter storm killed at least 136 people and causes over 9.9 million power outages in the U.S.

On 19, the United States officially rejoined the Paris Agreement, 107 days after leaving.

On March 19, North Korea severed diplomatic ties with Malaysia.

On 20, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced his country's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.

More than 270 people were killed in Indonesia and East Timor after Cyclone Seroja hit East Nusa Tenggara and the island of Timor on Apr 4.

Raúl Castro resigned as First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party on Apr 19.

Idriss Déby, President of Chad, was killed in clashes with rebel forces on Apr 20 after 30 years in office.

On Apr 22, World leaders marked Earth Day by hosting a virtual summit on climate change.

At least 55 people were killed and nearly 50,000 more were displaced in clashes between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on Apr 28.

On this day, the European Union approved the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, governing the relationship between the EU and UK after Brexit.

On Apr 30, in Israel, 45 people are killed and another 150 injured in a crowd crush at a religious festival on Mount Meron.

On May 15, an Israeli airstrike destroyed a high-rise office building in Gaza occupied by Associated Press, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets.

On June 5, the G7 agreed on a global minimum corporate tax rate of 15% intended to prevent tax avoidance by some of the world's biggest multinationals.

From June 11 to June 13, World leaders met at the 47th G7 summit, hosted by the United Kingdom.

The Tigray Defense Force on June 28 seized the Tigrayan capital Mekelle.

On July 3, over 130 wildfires, burn through Western Canada following a record-breaking heatwave in North America that resulted in over 600 deaths.

On July 7, Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was shot to death in his home.

On 12, heavy rain caused flooding in the border region of Germany and Belgium, resulting in 229 deaths, including 184 in Germany, 42 in Belgium.

Sher Bahadur Deuba was sworn-in as 43rd Prime Minister of Nepal on July 13.

On 19, leftist schoolteacher Pedro Castillo was confirmed as President of Peru.

On 25, Tunisian president Kais Saied formally took power in the country, suspending the parliament and sacking the prime minister.

On Aug 5, the Tigray Defense Forces seized the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lalibela.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Haiti, killing more than 2,100 people on Aug 14.

On 15, the Taliban capture Kabul; the Afghan government surrenders to the Taliban.

On 26, at least 182 people are killed, including 13 U.S. service members, in a su***de bomb attack at Kabul airport.

On 14, North Korea demonstrated two short-range ballistic missiles that land just outside Japan's territorial waters.

A trilateral security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States is formed on September 15, to counter the influence of China.

On 20, the 2021 Canadian federal election was held, with Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party retaining a minority government.

On 26, the 2021 German federal election was held, with the Social Democratic Party beating out the CDU/CSU coalition.

On 4, Fumio Kishida became the 100th Prime Minister of Japan, succeeding Yoshihide Suga.

On October 9, Sebastian Kurz announced his resignation as Chancellor of Austria.

On 25, the Sudanese military launched a coup and placed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok under house arrest.

From October 31 to November 13, the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference is held, after being postponed in 2020 due to COVID-19.

On November 23, a bus crashed in Pernik Province, Bulgaria, killing 46 North Macedonian tourists returning from Istanbul.

On 24, Magdalena Andersson resigned as Prime Minister-elect of Sweden hours after the Riksdag voted her in as Sweden's first female Prime Minister.

The World Health Organization convened an emergency meeting in Geneva amid concerns over Omicron variant on November 26.

On 30, Barbados became a republic on its 55th anniversary of independence.

On December 6, the United States announced a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

On 8, Indian defence chief, Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others were killed in a helicopter crash.

A truck crashed in Chiapas, Mexico, killing 55 migrants on December 9.

From December 9 to 10, the Summit for Democracy, a virtual summit, was hosted by the United States.

On 19, the 2021 Hong Kong legislative election was held.

On December 26, South African anti-apartheid icon Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu died aged 90.
