Somehow I’ve managed to not fall in a creek (yet)

There’s a lot of thermal activity in Japan, which means the water is sometimes warmer than you might expect.

Out of curiosity, I have stuck my hand in a creek or two to test the temp and it’s not bath water, but it’s also not ice cold.

Regardless of temp… I’m still hoping I stay out of them.

Weekly Japan photo dump 🇯🇵

Smiling on the skin track up! Love a little walk. The trail breaking here can be real deep some days ❄️

Maybe the most aesthetic line I’ve seen so far, sometimes it’s hard to believe this is work and I didn’t just walk into a ski movie.

Custard fish! The treats here are unreal, but this warm fish shaped pastry filled with cream is one of my favourites for sure. There’s a few ski hills with mandatory snack stop post ski.

It snows a lot, so you don’t often get a good sunset. But when it’s on, it’s on 🌅

First 2 weeks in Japan 🇯🇵

All but 2 days have been spent on snow getting to learn the areas I’ll be guiding in, and the folks I’ll be sharing this winter with.

The quality of ski hill food is almost as unreal as the amount of fresh tracks to be had.

My North American brain has adjusted well and I haven’t (yet) driven on the wrong side of the road. I think it’s partially thanks to Dom’s lessons when we were in the UK.

So far, so good ❄️🤙🏼

Happy that and I have been able to get out for a few good days on snow before I go away!

We’ve scouted quite a few things we want to do in the spring when I’m back, and finally explored the mountains we look at every day from our front window. Which is something we’ve been eyeing up since we first went to look at our place almost 2 years ago.

It’s sad to be leaving my adventure partner for the winter, but I’m grateful that he’s so supportive of me taking this opportunity to go guide in Japan. ❤️ also for the good days we’ve had out there so far!

I’ll be excited for the spring to ride some new spots, and get out biking and on road trips with the dogs in our new camper! ❤️

This might look like a photo of someone staring pensively out into the mountains before her….

But in reality this is a gal who had “the bear went over the mountain” stuck in her head for hours and was singing a snowboard version of it.

🎶 “the boarder went over the mountain to see what he could ski, but all that he could ski was the other side of the mountain….” 🎶

Whoever wrote that song was onto something, it really does feel like these things go forever.

Also shout out to Instagram for having the Veggie Tales version of this song as an option so everyone else can get it stuck in their head too

I’ve taken many mediocre grocery store samosas on backcountry adventures.

Time to trade the sweaty backback summer samosa for the half frozen ski touring samosa, how exciting!

Do you have a go to backpack lunch? I like whatever is cheap, and won’t be too awful if it gets smashed up in transport.

Via Ferrata: “Iron Path”

Gaining notice from WW1 when they were used to help soldiers pass through the mountains, now a unique way to experience climbing alpine rock for fun.

I’m stoked to be spending my summer guiding folks through the via Ferrata at ! A few of my favourite things are being out in the mountains, and helping others enjoy them too 🗻

Some lucky duck out there got the 3 sisters with the northern lights *not* on an iPhone, but I’m afraid all this goose can offer is this less talented version.

An unexpected light show was an unreal way to start off my parents visit to BC!

Like everyone else on your feed today, I was blown away by the lights last night and how much they seem to have brought everyone together

Okay but how was this only a few weeks ago and where did the snow go? 💔

Anyone else feel like we were just starting to actually get winter, and now all of a sudden it’s April?

I’m holding onto hope that this is just some weird mid winter melt/reset cycle of some sort… I’m not ready for spring yet. Yesterday I seriously considered taking my bike out for a ride, but it’s too early to allow biking thoughts.

Come on snow 🙏🏼❄️

Just got home from spending a few days in the backcountry at a hut!

It was a great time, and if you haven’t booked a hut to basecamp out of for a few days of ski touring, I highly recommend!

The hut was user maintained, so we brought all the food, clothes, sleeping bags and gear we would need for the 3 nights.

We had two full days of touring, and managed to find a pretty sweet line on our second day that was beside the last pieces of a glacier. (Third picture)

We experienced all the weather. From -30 the first night, to -3 on our walk out the last day. We had snow, wind, sunshine and flat light. On the second day it was bluebird, and a clear night full of stars.

10/10 would recommend, 10/10 doing it again!

Finally got back out on the sled yesterday!

Don’t be fooled- I use this thing 99% for access so I don’t have to walk my butt the trail part of going up a mountain.

It’s just starting to be “high tide” enough for the skiers to get excited, and fill in the trail enough for me to not overheat.

One of my goals for this season is to get more confident on my sled. I’ve always been happy as a clam trail riding.. mountain sledding is a totally different game though.

I’m *really* good at keeping both skis on the snow, but that’s not exactly how it’s supposed to work….

But hey, isn’t it fun to have something to work towards?

Been trying to make the most of it lately!

Don had 3 weeks off school for Christmas break, and we’ve been doing our best to get outdoors as much as we can.

The snowmobile dreams died when the dry spell hit, but that just encouraged us to go a bit farther on the split boards. It’s nice to cut the extra kms off the hike, but you also don’t get the same nature moments (or cardio workout) when you’re propelled by two stroke.

How’s your Christmas/holiday time been? Getting outside, or staying in and soaking up the warmth? Both are great, and we’ve had a balance for sure!

2•0•2•3

What freakin year! A lot of firsts, some hard goodbyes, and a big record of good times.

I spent a lot time exploring the backcountry with Dom, the dogs and friends. So much time outside in all the seasons!

I travelled international for the first time since the vid’ and added Scotland and Iceland to the list of countries I’ve visited.

I took Dom to Nova Scotia to meet my family and see where I’m from. Effort was made between me and my bestie across the border to see each other and we went to some pretty awesome concerts!

Dom and I bought our first house, a 50+ year old trailer, but it’s our home and we love it. This also meant moving to a town that’s been calling me for years, but leaving the place I’ve called home for just as long.

I had my first major injury snowboarding (minus concussions) and spent a few months with some leg hardware and a lack of activity. I’m feeling the repercussions of the lack of movement with my uphill travel currently.. but I’m not feeling any knee pain so I’d say it’s worth it.

In the first part of winter 2023 I was able to share my love for the backcountry and help others get out there a little more safely through teaching AST 1 courses.

It wasn’t without some harder days, but I guess that’s all part of life. There’s some people, pets and places I said goodbye to that I’ll always miss.

I’m looking forward to what 2024 has to bring, thanks to everyone who was part of the good times last year ❤️

My feed is full of fall in the Rockies!

Currently I’m out east, so here’s a couple pictures from a hike in Glacier NP, almost exactly a year ago.

The latches are cool and all, but have you ever experienced fall on the east coast?

Another fun fact, this is the first proper home Dom and I went on together 🍂

Hoping to catch the end of the larches when I’m back west in a few days!
